Dual audio from Mac Pro

Do the front and rear analog audio jacks both work at the same time? I'm trying to output to my Receiver, but have a small set of desktop speaker I use when the room or receiver is busy. I'd love to use the optical out, but the receiver's optical input is already in use; so I might try a reversed splitter for a few bucks.
