Is possible, but just don't do it.
External HDD's were never meant to run as boot drives since the bus speeds of FW800 and even eSATA aren't fast enough to handle all that data transfer. Even though eSATA is plenty fast, I think the idea of having an OS on an external drive is just cumbersome.
Use your externals for only storage.
