I have an HP display connected to my 2011 21' base model iMac with a display port mini to rga cable. When the HP monitor is not being used I turn it off and switch the display output to mirror. I'm assuming that this monitor is still using the computers resources like ram and cpu. Is there anyway to quickly and easily completely turn off all data being sent to the other monitor without disconnecting it?

A display doesn't consume anything. And when you turn it off your mac and your videocard doesn't see it anymore and you are back to using a single screen.
