I have a MacBook Pro that I usually leave closed and running with a 27" Thunderbolt display and external keyboard/mouse. When I travel, I just disconnect the laptop and work on the move.
I have now reached a stage where I would like to have two identical large monitors to work with. Unfortunately, it seems that Apple no longer sell displays and my institution is reluctant to buy one second hand on eBay. This means potentially working with unmatched monitors, which would ruin the feng shui in my office ;-)
I'd be interested to hear anyone's thoughts on:

I'd be interested to hear anyone's thoughts on:
- Whether I can use a closed MacBook Pro to run two large displays at the same time.
- If this can be done, what additional adaptors would I need to buy?
- What is the best (or perhaps most cost effective) way of buying two large (at least 27") non-Apple displays? Can anyone recommend a specific product?
