I have a MacBook Pro that I usually leave closed and running with a 27" Thunderbolt display and external keyboard/mouse. When I travel, I just disconnect the laptop and work on the move.

I have now reached a stage where I would like to have two identical large monitors to work with. Unfortunately, it seems that Apple no longer sell displays and my institution is reluctant to buy one second hand on eBay. This means potentially working with unmatched monitors, which would ruin the feng shui in my office ;-)

I'd be interested to hear anyone's thoughts on:
  • Whether I can use a closed MacBook Pro to run two large displays at the same time.
  • If this can be done, what additional adaptors would I need to buy?
  • What is the best (or perhaps most cost effective) way of buying two large (at least 27") non-Apple displays? Can anyone recommend a specific product?

Most modern Mac's can run just about any screen you'd want to buy..

As far as screens go decide what resolution you want then start shopping though I generally prefer Dell screens. Right now for the first time in years I'm not using a Dell I'm using a Samsung 590D but I've not had it long enough yet to form an opinion on it.

Is it easy enough to run two large screens? Would I need a cable to run between them or would they individually plug into the Mac?
