dual screen help

I was running my MB in clamshell mode today and I noticed that when I opened my laptop to use dual screens, the monitor on my laptop was still turned off. Does anyone know how to turn it back on w/o restarting it?

One more thing. Is there a way to go into clamshell mode w/o having the laptop to go to sleep through the process?
