I got a pair of used X5670s out of a Dell server. Installation went fine and my Mac Pro booted right up. Unfortunately, Safari and most of the applications I use would randomly crash. The only cause I could think of is the pair of CPUs.

I'd greatly appreciate your inputs and thoughts.

Was this a previous MP4,1 you upgraded to a MP5,1 ? If so, did you apply/install the necessary firmware upgrade to get to 5,1 ?

The Mac Pro 4,1 will not even boot with a X5670 processor installed since the 4,1 EFI does not support that processor. Since he is booting into the OS and using the computer he has had to have flash with the hacked 5,1 EFI. That is all of course assuming that he has a Mac Pro 4,1 but since his signature says that he has a Mac Pro 5,1 I'll assume that is what he has.

No worries. I have been guilty of that myself, sadly more than once.

My Mac Pro is an original 5,1 2010 model year. Booting up is perfectly fine as I mentioned in the original post. The random crashing is with applications during use. OS X Yosemite 10.10.1 itself has not crashed or thrown kernel panic since the CPU upgrade.

    ----------

I searched around with the error code and it seems RAM might be the cause. The confusing thing is the RAM modules are the same as before. I removed the modules before taking the CPU coolers off. I cleaned the CPU/RAM board up with compressed air prior to putting the CPUs, coolers and RAM modules back in place.

Ok. After some more digging, I'm inclined to say this error/crash issue has to deal with the memory modules/memory slot. I see this temp readings using HWmonitor.

Any input on how to correct this? I left memory slot 4 and 8 empty which are the ones showing crazy high temperatures of 264 degree.

    Hello,

I installed HWMonitor today out of curiosity and was about to post my observations of very high temperatures when I saw your post. My numbers for the empty memory banks and GPU are identical. It is highly improbable that this is a coincidence so it must be a problem with the app itself. It isn't reading the real temperature and so fills it out with a default number. I have not installed the extra kexts that came with the app.

Yes, you are right. I thought that was strange too. So I took 3 modules out of Bank B and the empty slots show 264.

At least, I can rule out one more possible cause.
