DuckDuckGo Launches 3-in-1 'Privacy Pro' Subscription With VPN and Personal Data Removal Tool

DuckDuckGo today announced the launch of Privacy Pro, a new subscription service that bundles three privacy-focused features together.

Privacy Pro includes a VPN for anonymous browsing and secure connections regardless of location, personal information removal for removing personal data from data broker sites, and identity theft restoration should any DuckDuckGo subscriber suffer from an identity theft situation.

The VPN works on up to five devices simultaneously, so it can be installed and used on a Mac, iPhone, iPad, and other devices at the same time. It is turned on through the DuckDuckGo browser so a second app is not required, and it does filter traffic through all apps and browsers.

DuckDuckGo's personal information removal tool regularly scans 50 sites that sell information, such as Spokeo. Personal information is stored on device, and removal requests are initiated using the information provided during setup. The process is automated, and there is a dashboard to monitor results.

Identity theft restoration includes the support of a dedicated advisor that will work with users to restore stolen accounts, replace bank cards and other identifying documents, recover financial losses, and correct credit reports.

Privacy Pro from DuckDuckGo is priced at $9.99 per month or $99.99 per year, and it is currently only available in the United States. Users will need to ensure they are using the latest version of the DuckDuckGo browser to take advantage of the features.

I get NordVPN for way less and the other features seem a bit... intangible. Always use DDG but won't be using this service.

Eventually I'll have to choose one.

With regards to duckduckgo itself, I have been using it as my default search engine for 10 years and I'm 100% satisfied (I'm not too much of an interner power user though...)

There are much cheaper options for VPNs. I got 3 years of Atlas VPN for $71.49.

I still have no idea why people think their privacy is covered by a VPN. Literally the majority of the tracking and telemetry is at the application layer which shoots straight through the VPN and is easy to correlate with who you are.

Also I have issues with their personal data removal thing. You can't identify personal data easily, you can only use heuristic analysis and rules to find stuff you are aware of and remove it. It is not foolproof, so this is not privacy. Much like a sieve, the only viable approach is to not put anything in the sieve but they're selling a way to block up some of the holes.

I used Incogni for a year because I got it cheaper but I did not like that it only looked for the email you signed up with and could not add additional email addresses

I’d love to! But the lack of iOS/Safari support kills the value for me. Hopefully, Apple adds Kagi support or lets advanced users add their own search engines a la Firefox.

DuckDuckGo is a wrapper around Bing, a second-rate search engine that’s not as good as Google, which is also pretty near useless by now. Good luck rearranging the deck chairs on a sinking replica of the Titanic.

FWIW - I got Aura Protection Plus as a benefit from my company and removal of data from data brokers has been completely useless via Aura.

I got to beta test the VPN. Honestly, it's pretty simple. I'm sure they changed, but there wasn't any option to change VPN server or anything. It was a one-and-done VPN where you just click connect and that's it.
