Dumb question about firewire transfer between white macbook/MBP

So I'm upgrading to the new 17" MBP, I currently have a mid-2008 white macbook, firewire 400. On monoprice, I'm overwhelemed by cable solutions. Will a 9pin to 9pin work, even if its both listed as Firewire 800?

Help is appreciated, a search just left me a bit more confused

I'm pretty sure a 9-pin plug will not fit in a firewire 400 socket. You need a 6 pin <-> 9 pin cable.
