Hey, everyone:

Just got the AirPods 2 (which are the first pair of wireless buds I've used, thus the dumb question). I charged them last night (swear they were close to fully charged when I went to bed) and left them out of the case overnight. Went to the gym this morning and... both pods were dead. :-(

So...I'm ass-u-me-ing that because the batteries are tiny, they can't hold a charge for long, and I can't treat AirPods like a bigger gadget, ie, they'll stay charged for several days.

Is this assumption correct? If so, guess I'll have to keep them in the case when not in use. Also want to make sure I didn't get a bad pair.....

Thanks!

just leave them in the battery case when not in use and then there fully charged when needed.

If they aren’t in the case, they don’t know to go to sleep. So the batteries drain.

So in the time between you waking up & arriving to gym, you didn’t place the Airpods back in the case? Every time you go out, put them in the case.

Also, whenever you’re not using them, put them in the case.

Overnight - put them in the case.
:D

But, as per your overnight battery degradation - that shouldn’t happen. When my first pair were 20 months old, I tested them by leaving them out of the case overnight & they were ~65% in the morning (they apparently lose 3% every hour outside of case). These batteries weren’t holding their charge during use, so I exchanged them.

Yours seem to be losing way too much charge if in fact they’re not actually being used overnight & started at 100%?

What you didn’t put into account compared to the old ones:

The 2nd Gen will have to have the microphone open all night to listen to “Hey Siri”. We don’t know of the noise level throughout the night.

With that I would expect noticeable more drain than before.

Thanks for the info, everyone. Being new to Wireless Bud World (tm), I honestly wasn't sure what to do with the case when or where or who. So just stuffed the AirPods into my pocket and went to the gym. Much better to bring them IN the case! Science! Technology! Der.

I think they both hold a charge fine, but might test again to be sure.

interestingly, having to put the AirPods in the case immediately after use, unless my 2 sets of Airpods is defective, seems to undermine the charge capacity of the case. if you look at the other thread about charging case capacity, my limited testing as suggested that recharging slightly depleted AirPods is somehow inefficient and will yield nowhere near the "up to 24 hours" specified by Apple. i would love if a few more people would run some additional tests on their Airpods/cases to see if i managed to hit the "bad case lottery" twice in a row, or whether Apple has a large scale problem here.

thanks for indulging me...

Fair point.

& since the battery is much smaller than the iPhone (which also has the 'hey Siri' functionality, yet is able to stay at 100% overnight), it should drain more over that time.
