iPhone 12 Pro Dumbfounded by iOS updates and battery life …. WTH Apple?

I had what seemed to be unexplained Battery drain and mobile data usage (while I was driving).

Then I looked closely at my battery usage and found the Reddit app was absolutely plundering resources, yet I look at Reddit maybe once or twice a day. I immediately deleted the app. Seem to be back to normal now.

Woahhhh good catch! I actually am having pretty great battery life with 14.7.1 (a week later) but I just checked my battery list and I have the same thing as you with the Reddit App.

Maybe force background app refresh off with only Reddit might work?

Yeah it’s crazy hey. Nah I completely deleted the Reddit app, on my quest to understand what was going on with the Reddit app I Googled “Reddit app iOS battery” and discovered an endless amount of complaints going for quite a few years around this app being a resource hog.

The worst part about this particular day was that I had slept over at my friends place who do not use iPhones so no Apple chargers in sight, we had quite a few drinks so I was not going to drive, I stayed over and in the morning I woke up to my battery having gone from 52% to about 21% all due to the Reddit app that I barely open and I had also put the phone in Low Power Mode yet Reddit was absolutely drilling through my battery unabated consistently hour to hour, absolutely insane.

I do not plan on ever downloading that app again, it has lost my trust, and reading through comments about it on Reddit (using Safari to do that now) it seems this is an issue that has been coming and going for a few years.

There's lots of good things to check for in this thread, although I haven't read every post. I have an xR that was losing about 8% an hour. I've never had such a fast battery drain before, and it started within a a day or so after upgrading to 14.7.1. I downgraded to 14.7 this afternoon, and it's back to normal. What a relief.

My battery life is good but my battery health is 96% which is very unusual. My 11 Pro had 99% battery health when I sold it last year for the 12, and the 12 has been less than a year and dropped down to 96 already. Usage is no different on either device.

Agreed though Reddit doesn’t seem to eat that much battery compared to what you experience. My background activity on Reddit is pretty high for a less than 1 hour browsing as well

It makes absolutely no sense at all, what exactly is it doing for those 2h8mins in the background when you were barely on it for 4mins? Be sure to keep a close eye on it as even in Low Power Mode it will run rampant no matter what.

Same here… first frequent-use app to earn permanent deletion from me. Interestingly, my Reddit problem doesn’t show up in background consumption (see post #41 above). FWIW, give Apollo a shot - for me on wifi, it seems to use ~5% batt/hr vs Safari (and other apps) averaging ~7%/hr.

FYI.... to anyone who finds Safari high up on their battery usage list:

Are you using MacRumours on your device? If so, stop that and report back.

Some JS code running on the MacRumours forum is VERY CPU intensive. I got an iPhone 12 Pro a few weeks ago and was convinced my battery was a dud. If I used Safari (browsing these forums, it so happens) for 30 mins, half my battery would be gone. It was MacRumour's fault. With that out of the equation, my battery life is fine. I am very hesitant to use these forums on my phone as I don't want to wreck the battery health prematurely (the back of my phone gets extremely hot after 5 mins on here, too).

A few years ago / releases FaceBook was causing the same kind of battery drain. FB fixed it after it became a public big deal and I would expect other big name apps with similar battery drain issues will fix them.

Thanks a lot, will give Apollo a go. I wonder what causes the Reddit app to display such behaviour, it is really concerning that an app can go through the battery like that and the Reddit devs not notice it at all.

Yes, I remember this, very frustrating to, I deleted Facebook for a few months. They are all so quick to release updates without properly doing QA.
