duplicate songs deletion querry

When I open Show Duplicates, there are 12000 plus items showing. When I organize by name, some songs show up as multiple copies next to each other, some show up as a single song. What is iTunes showing me as duplicates? Is it saying that a single song is listed to be deleted b/c there is another copy of it and it's not showing the second copy? If so, how do I know it's not eliminating same title but different version of the same song? Or is it confused in some way? Or am I? TIA
