Hey, I was wondering if anybody else had been looking into the new duplicate function in iOS 16 (and Ventura)?

Detecting duplicates worked fine for both the personal and shared library till - I think - dev beta 4, but after installing this beta - and all afterwards - duplicates seem to only be detected in the personal library. Moreover all the duplicates that were detected in Beta 3 disappeared. (only the reference to be it a duplicate, not the files themselves.)

My wife and I always copied the photos we took to each other, resulting in two libraries with the same photos. When creating the shared library we both moved our photos to the shared library, resulting in about 33.000 duplicates. Since this was and is beta software I didn't want to use the merge duplicate function on our photos. The shared library though, worked, and is still working fine between us. Everything is synced etc.

But all the references to the duplicates have thus disappeared. I then tried an offline small library as a test, duplicates were perfectly detected. Then I made some duplicates in our libraries. 2 in my personal library, 2 in the shared library and one of each in the personal and shared library. Only the duplicates in the personal library were detected, meaning that I now have 33.000 duplicates for which I have to find a solution.

Anyone with the same experience?

Thanks!
Dave

Nobody here has the same experience?

Duplicates are detected in my personal library, but still not in the shared library. I did the test with two photos I made duplicates of, one in the personal library, one in the shared library. Only the former is detected.

Same scenario on all my devices: MacBook Pro, Mac Studio, iPhone 14 Pro Max and iPad Pro.

I did notice that when I do a rebuild on the MacBook Pro or Mac Studio of the photo library, the duplicates are temporarily detected, but they disappear before the syncing is done...

Any ideas?

Thanks!

Dave

I have not installed Ventura yet. But I had duplicates on my iOS devices until I created a shared library. Now the duplicates folder is not showing up.

Duplicates are detected in my personal library, but not our shared library on all devices. Both Ventura and iOS 16 seem very buggy to me.

With 16.2, the duplicates folder reappeared for my shared library. But it’s been only one night so it hasn’t populated yet. Let’s see in a couple more days…
