Why can’t we make a phone out of a high quality plastic, instead? It would resolve durability issues with the rear of the device, at least.

Glass is generally going to be more scratch resistant than plastic. It would be a trade off between breakability and scaratchability. I wonder how sapphire would hold up.

I always get AppleCare+ because I carry my phone "naked". I figure the peace of mind of having the coverage is worth it, as i don't like the added bulk of a case. *Knocks on wood - hasn't been an issue yet.

I would also like to point out, as I haven't seen it mentioned anywhere yet, Apple is offering the new iPhones with the military/veteran discount (to include AppleCare+). 10% discount, so not too bad.

Make it out of something other than glass, at least on the back. I wonder what % users use wireless charging ??

Failing that, if it it must be glass - make that easy to replace. Seems like the choice of glass certainly helps AppleCare sales

This is why AC+ is your friend (especially if you use your phone naked). Nothing else new to see here.

The moral of the story, if you’re going to go without a case then invest in a iPhone protection plan that covers damage.

didn't Apple make a big point on how the new iPhones survive drops better?

Kind of hilarious how many people in here are just floored that people are testing those claims.

In other news I read today it was also confirmed that long pants are indeed - long, although speculation remains about this “blue sky” conundrum.

Can’t this sort of drivel be saved for some forum thread. I know it was a slow weekend and Apple said the phone was less prone to breaking but these are just about the dumbest tests. Let’s find out if a $1k+ device made of glass can handle abuse. And then let’s make videos of it. And then let’s call this article worthy.

Prepare to be modded in 3...2...1...

Like seriously, what’s the point of these tests? It’s glass, it’s gonna break! I’m not saying you should baby the thing, but put a case on it and just be a little conscious of where you put it. Going two years with my iPhone X and not a single scratch or drop. I guess this is for the clumsy.
Or maybe people on high does on doses pain medication like Morphine, or with disabilities who that find holding the phone can get harder harder or hell you are just tired maybe! Nothing is as black and white as ''I guess this is for the clumsy"

These tests aren't for information, they're for entertainment
Out of all the "tests" in the article, I think that only SquareSpace has a legitimate need to test the durability. They have to know how likely any phone is to break, so they can estimate how much it will cost to offer warranties.

Hopefully publishing this kind of information can help prevent other "curious" people from ruining a phone, but yes I agree most of it is for clicks.

I believe sapphire is even more rigid than glass. Holds up to scratches better, but with less flex it will actually crack more easily depending on the circumstance. It's also not as optically transparent.

I have opposable thumbs and have never dropped a mobile telephone in my life. People should think more about what they’re doing and less about whether or not Apple have designed a bomb-proof phone that enables clumsiness without consequence.

Oh no, I dropped an egg, and it eventually broke.

Duh. These things are small, glass clad handheld computers. Of course they break when you drop them...

Exactly!! Apple made a point of how the iPhone had the most unbreakable glass (or something along those lines) and people are confused why those claims are being put to the test???

Apple is and always will be, fashion over form. They simply could care less about durability and the customer holding a device with a shattered screen. They have beautiful phones, but since they are so fragile, they end up getting concealed by a protective case and it becomes moot.

What would be great, is a phone that is protected out of the box.
