DVD - avi/mp4

Hi Guys I am looking to convert my dvd's to my iphone - Do i need to go dvd - avi - mp4 or can i got dvd - mp4?

i would love you to point me in the correct direction - also some free apps that can do this for OSX would be brill

yes, and if handbrake can't get by the copyright try mactheripper and then handbrake.
