Can I insert mini-dvd's from my Sony Handycam into the slot drive on my iMac OSX?
No, mini DVDs (8.5cm) are not meant for slot-drives, only for tray loading drives.

Thank you for your reply! Any advice for importing footage from a mini dvd sony handycam that seems to be incompatible with my new mac?
Get an external tray loading DVD drive, use a tray loading DVD drive on another computer and transfer via LAN or external HDD or flash memory stick.
Or if the camera has a USB port use that to read the DVD inside the camera, if that is possible.
Maybe you can have a look at the manual of the camera?
