I am looking for a free, safe download online that will transfer my DVDs to whatever the type of format the iPod uses.

Tried handbrake. I don't know, but it didn't work :].

Handbrake will work, you may need Mac The Ripper first.

For handbrake, what do I have to do to make it work? Set it to a specific thing. . . . . Or what?

Handbrake or Visual Hub is what everyone uses. Both have pre-canned settings for iPod Video conversion.

Handbrake works great when it works...

...but be warned that there are some discs that Handbrake will not work with. Do some poking around and you will find a running list of discs other Handbrake users have run into problems with.

I use Handbrake - it's worked great for me on several DVDs. The only DVDs it would not work with for me were the Lord Of the Ring DVDs.
