Last night I was watching a Metallica DVD and then it just stopped working and froze the program "DVD Player" and I 'Forced Quit' the program and then I went to eject the disc, but the iMac is saying that there is no disc in the drive itself, so the eject button won't work, I go to re-open the DVD Player and it says that "A valid DVD drive could not be found. [-70012].

Would I have to take this to an Apple store?

If it can't find the *drive*, that would imply that something has happened to the physical connection. Therefore, it would be either the logic board, the cable, or the optical drive itself. Verify that it doesn't show up in the system profiler. If not, then yes, you'll have to take it in.
