new to mac

popped in my first dvd to a brand new pb
it has some photos and a slide show created by a friend...he didn't region code it (at least i'm pretty sure he didn't)

osX asking me to choose a region and that i've got 5 time to change this

why do i have to make my first choice for a data dvd ??

also, is there a way to access a dvd while by-passing osX's dvd player software?

I believe VLC can help you with this...though I am a bit of newb in this area myself.

Guess I will wait for other DVD-heads to respond and verify or correct me.

This isn' OSX's fault but some court case a while back split the world into 7 regions (0 being universal). I think the first time you use the DVD player it'll ask what region you want the firmware to be set at. There is no way I know to change it without ruining your warranty (your friend's DVD should be region 0 -if a video DVD-, unless he's being an ass).

EDIT: VLC will bypass OSX's DVD Player restriction, but the hardware restriction will be there.
