Fair enough, done, I look forward to your response...
When you have a self-proclaimed "IT professional" whose blog includes posts like this:
Does your Apple notebook hard drive (HDD) ever sound like little mice are playing table tennis inside of it? Or, why your HDD might be pre-programmed for quick failure.
then you know you're in for fun times. I just want to see what he will spout next :D

The last two trolls above this post have a total of 15 posts ever written on MacRumors.

Ah yes, the number of posts: age old indicator of who is truly right.

Thinking back on it, I actually Did a fresh OS install there a few months back, and one of the first things I did (well in advance of torr'ing) was to try burning DVD-DL's. No joy. That, and I've tried it on Macs that don't torrent. No joy. This doesn't rule out your nonsensical suggestion, but it doens't look very likely.

*reins in urge to trollbash*

I know this thread seems well dead, but on the off-chance someone with the same problem has come along since;

Eventually picked up a new pack of DVD-DL's of a different brand, and they worked a speedy treat. I havent initialised the content of the disc yet, but it seems to boot etc. like a gem, and no doubt the prog will work fine too. No other changes were made to the general setup.

On the "quality" of the media: they were none other than Tesco's €5 finest. So it seems that while it Is* the media, price isn't a reliable standard. But it is the media. It is the media. It is the media.

Voila. I have solved the issue for myself (thank f-), and earned clubcard points. Hope this helps =J

 Finally, Sense

There's all sorts of possibilities actually. Sometimes it's a dirty drive lens, sometimes its the media, sometimes it's a software issues, and sometimes the drive has simply gone bad.

 Duh ! Finally an answer that makes sense. It could be any one of those things or even a combination of of them.

Weird Coincidence

So, yeah - this thing probably is dead, but stuff is still happening, so I saw this somewhere else on a thread and tried it, and it worked like 50% of time. It's a weird one.

Go into System Preferences - go to International - in Language, move another Language to the top, then move English back to the top. Show all, blah blah - get back to your burn.

The first time I tried this, it worked, and I seriously was freakin amazed. It doesn't work every time. But just something extra to throw to the fire. And now you can throw it away :)

m3mor3x suX!

Power Mac G5 user (sucks not up to date yet but great machine still) ... disc drive had always burned flawlessly EXCEPT... whenever i try to use a MEMOREX brand disc... DVD OR CD... same thing happens ... gets to end and "medium write error". wasted money on at least one spool of dvd's and now a year later on CD's same $#!%. My advice... MAYBE cleaning the drive works but mine is pretty clean. I'll just avoid MEMOREX brand altogether as a MAC user... and i suggest u do the same!

Sense Key = Medium Error
Sense Code = 0x0C
WRITE ERROR
Disc cant be burned (error code 0x8002006E)

The above has been a problem with my 15" MBP for a while, I have this problem with 4 brands of -DVD's. After trying everything I have found on the web searching for fixes (too stubborn to take to apple store). 3 days ago I stuck a "GE Laser Lens Cleaning Disc" in and let it spin for a bit and then ejected same.
WaaaLaa I have since burned 11 DVDs on different brand blanks with no problems, YET.
Keeping my fingers crossed, next step if it starts again is the Apple Store to see a Genius. Guess I am lucky to have 2 within 20 miles of our house.

Good Luck

be sure you are set to mp3 Encoder in itunes 10 preferences

My attempts to burn audio CDs of mp3s on itunes were failing with these symptoms: the CD want from initializing to finishing without actually burning anything, and then popped out with the 'medium write errror' message.

My problem was fixed when I reset the burning options on itunes. Note: older itunes versions have a 'burn tab' under Advanced in the preferences menu (almost every online discussion I found keeps referring to this outdated information); for itunes 10 (I'm on 10.1.2), there is no 'burn' tab, rather: go to Preferences - General - Import Settings, then set 'Import Using' to 'MP3 Encoder'.

This worked for me; goodbye 'medium write error' message, hello CD copy of Radiohead's King of Limbs...

Same Issue

I've been getting this issue on my iMac 27" for some time now, sometimes It burns and sometimes it doesn't. I recently bought a 150 spindle of DVD-R's, the same as what I was previously using, (TDK, for those interested!) the first few worked perfectly and then I began to see the Medium Write Error.

This confused me, so; over the period of the last year or so I have performed the following attempts to fix/rectify this issue:

  • Cleaning using compressed air
  • Lens cleaning disk
  • Different media brands
  • Different write speeds
  • Different types of media (CD-R, CD+R, DVD-R, etc…)
  • Complete reinstall
  • Different Operating systems (Windows XP, 7, 8, Ubuntu, Mint, Fedora, Debian…)
  • Alternate programs (Toast, DiskUtility & diskutil, IMGBurn, PartedMagic, many others)

I continued to get this problem up until recently, I attempted to burn a TDK disc, when the errors appeared and the disc ejected, I simply pushed it back in, selected a different write speed and tried again. This occurred 2-3 times before the disc began to burn successfully.

This is the ISO I have been attempting to burn for the last few weeks (with no success until now!)

Thank you for suggesting something besides changing disc brand, blowing air in the drive, etc. Just tried this and it worked perfectly! Like you say, it is a weird one, but fixed my burning issue :)
