Can someone advise whether it is necessary to shut my MBP down to plug or un-plug a monitor connected through the DVI port?

as far as I know, its not a problem. I've been plugging in and unplugging DVI cables for years with no ill effects.

No you can just remove the monitor cable. You might need to use the Detect Displays... command afterwards.
There is no issue with unplugging any type of monitor cable while the computer is turned on. They are hot swappable.
