Trying to connect my G5 with X1900 GPU to a Dell U2715H monitor.

Could this be my problem…?
The GPU is DVI-I, but the cable is DVI-D to HDMI.

Would a single link DVI to HDMI work, I don’t need the screen shared G5 to run at full rez.
It only needs to be connected for occasional direct monitor access (i.e. for shutting down, as this cannot be done from screen sharing, so I can just switch monitor inputs).

It should but you tried that already (you said you used a DVI-D to HDMI cable).

Enable screen sharing in Mac OS X 10.5 or use a VNC Server in Mac OS X 10.4 to see what the system thinks about the display. Maybe it's trying to use an unsupported mode. Choose a lower resolution such as 1920x1080.

The cable I have has the full bank of square pins (technical term…. 🥴), which is a dual link (screen grab above post). I have just ordered a single link with the two banks of nine pins….🤞

Which will make 0 difference as a passive adapter to HDMI will always be single link.

Spec for that is 165MHz newer cards (like late HDxxxx/Rx 2x0) will just blast 300MHz through that (since their DVI port is just a HDMI one with a weird connector).
X1900/1950 can push it to about 210MHz, but that would require the SW side not enabling the 2nd link (at which point you will only see every 2nd pixel).

Short story extra long:
Without a DL_DVI monitor or a DL_DVI capable adaptor anything beyond 1920x1200 will fail. Now why the G5 and monitor don't manage to agree on such a res is the issue.
Is the X1900 a genuine Apple part or some reflashed PC part?

It is the Apple G5 edition (bought new……waaaaaay back).
I will have another look at the weekend, it was a while ago I tried my existing cable (I ended up connecting an old 19” dvi monitor direct which worked fine).
Maybe as @joevt suggests, I need to set a lower resolution (it would have been set at 1920x1200, when last used).

It could be the first cable is not bi-directional, so only works from hdmi GPU to dvi monitor.
The one on it’s way is listed as bi-directional.

Success….. 😁

The new cable arrived today.
Connected my old 19” dvi to one port, and the dell 27” to the other.
I was then able to select different resolutions from the 19” for the Dell.
1280x720
1280x1024
1600x1200
1920x1080
2048x1132

I then made the Dell the main display and turned off the 19”.

Hello! Can you please tell us what cable you have used? :D

This sounds like picking the correct resolution via screen sharing would've also worked on the other cable.

In retrospect, as @Project Alice states above I think my original dual-link cable would have worked.
It was a case of having a second ‘old’ monitor to select the resolution on the newer one.

Now it is all set up, when accessing my G5 with screen sharing it works with 2560x1440, when I look in the system prefs for display…. 😁
