Isn't it weird Apple hasn't ditched the notch for the Dynamic Island on MacBooks yet? If they can do it on iPhone, surely they can do it on the MacBook. It would take up less space than the notch.

Dynamic island is purely an elegant attempt to embrace the notch. What does dynamic island bring to MacBook, And macOS in general? The best way to remove the notch is still adding top bezels, but enough people hating that approach and we are here, an awkward cutout that eats away menubar space.

Nah. It makes little sense to bring it to Macs other than if they wanted to do it for continuity. Macs have much more space to display those types of notifications/alerts etc more efficiently without intruding on the menubar further.

Yeah, I agree about not needing the DI for notifications and such. I'm just mainly talking about the DI's smaller footprint. Honestly, I don't know why Apple didn't just go for a pinhole cutout for the MacBooks instead of the notch. The notch makes sense on iPhones because it needs space to house the Face Id components, but all you need on a MacBook for the camera is a small pinhole cutout. So why the notch?

IMO, the notch makes a ton of sense on MacBooks because the center area of the menu bar was extremely underutilized (to the point that for most people, it wasn't used at all). With what we think of as the notch, Apple effectively moved the top of the screen higher, putting the menu bar in an area that previously wasn't usable at all. While many people focus on the notch, I think the real benefit is the additional screen real estate overall -- i.e., the menu bar no longer takes up space in the uninterrupted area below the camera assembly.

Will it get smaller in the future? Probably. But I think it was the right solution for current needs, and probably doesn't need a "Dynamic Island" to dress it up.

Just released a app called DynamicLake Pro that bring Dynamic Island to macOS

One of the benefits that the (software side of) Dynamic Island brings to the iPhone is a degree of multitasking and fast switching. With the Mac, that is already handled and you don’t need that the DI brings for that.

Because there are multiple components under there, not just the camera. There is the camera and two sensors, plus the mounting brackets. Since it is so thin, they can’t stack things. It will take redesigning the camera module and mounting and probably moving some items under the display to make it smaller. Maybe when they do the next redesign they will do that.

Whenever the MacBook Pro gets a redesign with OLED I'm pretty sure it'll have a dynamic island. The Dynamic island requires the screen to turn certain pixels off and that's not possible with the display in MacBooks currently (MiniLED can do it to a degree but there will be blooming like there is all over the rest of the screen).

I don't mind the notch but it's just there and doesn't offer any functionality other than keeping the camera in the same place and maximizing the rest of the screen. It's not obtrusive as it doesn't block anything. Dynamic Island would be great for notifications and all the rest of the things it does on iPhone.

A feel a much smaller notch is the way to go here. The current notch is unnecessarily large and mostly empty space as it stands.

Is there any way to go full screen on apps where the screen extends into the top row including the notch?

Possibly the camera module and other tech in there extends at least a little into the bezel too on Macs, so it couldn't be a Dynamic Island even if it wanted to be. But yeah one day it'd make sense to do it.

Yes, but developers have to specifically tool their apps to use that space, which the system classifies as auxiliary space. The default behavior that 99.99% of apps use is to draw their full screen windows under the notch and use the auxiliary space for the menu bar and menu icons.

Time to send an email to Parallels then!
