A key new feature of iPhone 14 Pro models is the Dynamic Island, a pill-shaped area that replaces the notch on previous models. Aided by software, the Dynamic Island morphs into different shapes and sizes for things such as incoming phone calls, alerts, notifications, Face ID authentication, timers, and more. Dynamic Island will also integrate with Live Activities in third-party apps starting later this year.

One smaller detail that we have now confirmed is that the Dynamic Island is only visible in screenshots taken on iPhone 14 Pro models while it is being used by apps, or when the camera/microphone indicator dots are active. The screenshot shows the entire Dynamic Island, including any added elements, such as a circular timer icon.

On the other hand, the Dynamic Island does not appear in screenshots when it is completely inactive. In this case, the screenshot simply shows the wallpaper behind the Dynamic Island, which is the same screenshot behavior as on iPhones with a notch.

This approach makes sense, as when the Dynamic Island is actively being used, it contains information that could be valuable for screenshots.

According to Marques Brownlee's review of the iPhone 14 Pro models, this same behavior applies to screen recordings on the devices as well.

So, when there is nothing "dynamic" to show, is it just pill & hole? Or just blank pill?

Or is this solely about screenshots and dynamic island is treated like a layer that is ignored when creating a screen shot as if it (including cameras) is not there at all (much like the option to show or not show a mouse pointer when doing a Mac screenshot)?

None of this surprises me. The dynamic Island is cool for what it is. But let’s be clear. They needed the cut out. They over thought it. They created a function to skin it positively. In the end, it should just be replaced by under screen technology for Touch ID or Face ID. But until that technology meets apple standards I’ll take making an otherwise crappy design decision of a cutout and making it not crappy any day

The Dynamic Island hints at this is only the beginning. I sense like there are big changes coming to the iPhone 15 next year. Of course, it will be a redesign as well USB C.
Yea Yea Yea USB C. I've heard that before and it didn't happen.

Who could’ve ever guessed the people crying about having to see the pill would now be crying about not seeing more of the pill. /s

What exactly was the “crappy design decision” of the hardware? They did put under the screen what they could, given the practical limits of current tech.

In recent times I think of the notch as a bezel with a screen on it, rather than a cut into the screen.

As such, it makes sense that the notch or DI doesn't show up in screenshots unless used.

Still, can't wait for a notch-less, pill-less, hole-punch-less iPhone.

Perhaps iPhone 16?

Android phones are already doing this pretty well, though I'd think it easier to hide a little hole than the GIANT pill/notch.

As I've commented before, I am convinced that the software Island will almost certainly outlive the current hardware "pill" cutout. Thus, I think it would be more interesting to learn how the Island appears when dynamic content is presented; for instance, does it animate as a growing pill shape from behind the actual hardware pill?

Answering this through a screen video recording could possibly give us a hint as to Apple's vision for what the island will look like, after the pill.
