The article makes it sound like this was a calculated decision when in reality this is what you'd expect it to do by default if they did not even think about screenshot behavior. This would also apply to an emulator or mirroring the display to anything. It's just a difference between the display as understood in software and the hardware reflection of that where they have cut holes in the screen. 🤦🏻‍♀️

I am more curious how this works with animation. If Apple did it right, the first frames of the expansion animation would be invisible on the hardware screen because it would take place under the cutout. Without that the animation would look very ugly when the dynamic island pops into view if you are looking at the software display without using the normal screen.

Guess I will find out when my device arrives and can plug it into my TV with my old adapter.

Edit: Didn't update to see Zarmanto's post before submitting this lol. Oh well.

How does the Dynamic Island work with Reachability? Does it pull down with the rest of the interface? Does it continue to appear at the top? Does it disappear completely?

My iPhone has a Static Island :(

I actually think that your parallel thoughts are interesting, and not necessarily a one-to-one of my own thoughts. It would indeed make more sense to animate the pill appearance, even if Apple isn't necessarily planning for an entirely under-screen camera release, quite yet.

In line with that, it occurs to me that I may be somewhat too optimistic; perhaps the iPhone 15 might instead have a smaller cutout than the 14, right in line with the 13 having a smaller notch than the 12. This could be accomplished through either additional miniaturization, or it could be a simple matter of putting the optical camera under the screen, but keeping the more sensitive FaceID sensors centered in the pill.

Good to know how screenshots work. Dynamic island may be displaying important information while in use. So makes sense to include it while it is actively being used.

Yea Yea Yea USB C. I've heard that before and it didn't happen.

Will be true eventually. Starting in Autumn 2024 new devices in the EU require USB-C to be sold.

But i guess that would allow them to still skip it next year.. or at least not change it on all devices yet

So, when there is nothing "dynamic" to show, is it just pill & hole? Or just blank pill?

Or is this solely about screenshots and dynamic island is treated like a layer that is ignored when creating a screen shot as if it (including cameras) is not there at all (much like the option to show or not show a mouse pointer when doing a Mac screenshot)?

I think it treated as some notifications may show private information that you don’t want shared.
