Does anybody know if in the new OS4 you can change the notification sound for emails.

    Thanks

Nope. Nor can you change SMS tones.

Apple: the iWay or the highway!

But you can change the SMS tones now so are you saying they have removed it?

I think mavis was referring to the fact that you can't use custom SMS tones, you can only use the ones preinstalled by Apple.

Oh , fair enough, that would be a good idea as well to have SMS custom tones but even to have pre-defined email sounds would be better than what we have as its too quiet

Crazy that it still does not have that option.

It's not a total solution, but I use 'Boxcar' to send me a push notice when I have new e-mail. I no longer have the mail program make a sound, I let Boxcar make the sound instead along with the push notice.

Now, Boxcar doesn't allow custom sounds either, but at least the library it lets you choose from contains different sounds than the normal mail program. So if you work near other iPhones you can at least get something unique that they don't use.

The fact that this isn't available yet is ridiculous and blows my mind. Tent pole feature in 5.0?

So, for SMS Tones you can change it to one of the included set.

Can you do the same for the e-mail notification?

Once it's released fanboys will call it so innovative and revolutionary, other smartphone makers will be scratching their heads wishing they thought of such a wonderful, genius idea. I'll just say Apple copied RIM, Google, and Microsoft.

Wow! Who'd a thunk? Even the little things we users want, Apple never fails on not delivering! Same ole chit, different day.

So, with the iOs4 Gold version out and about can anyone let us know the status regarding changing the email sound?

    Thanks

Sounds for New Mail and Sent Mail are just on/off switches.

Fortunately, it still makes the same sounds as Mail.app on my Mac, so I don't care about this. I suppose it's annoying if you really want a random New Mail sound though!

Yeah I don't know what the deal with this is, especially since a lot of the default sounds for notifications and ringtones on the iPhone are pretty lackluster in general IMO.

    I like Apple′s sounds..even if they offered customization, I wouldn′t change them.

I'm happy with the SMS option but the email tone is to quiet. This is annoying for people in a busy environment

I probably wouldn't customize either, but it would be nice to have the option. Also, some more preinstalled choices would be nice as well.

Well its out and I can't find anything.

I understand Apple's control philosophy but how is letting users change the email notification sound affect anything.
