Well, if you don't mind the outrageous cost per GB and it not affecting how fast you surf the web, do email, write Word docs or Excel spreadsheets, etc., sure, get an SSD.

With the OP's computer, a large 7200 RPM HD is a better use of money, else he's better off getting a newer laptop.

Wait, wait, wait.... A new computer or HDD doesn't improve speed either for surfing or writing etc...

I thought they were limited to 3gb of ram. hmmm i am only running 3 and would love to bump that up. How do i verfiy that I can run that much? I thought mine was a 2008..

What's your model identifier under about this mac, more info? The 4,1's can run 6gb.

I just upgraded to 8gb from 4gb yesterday and I'm mad at myself I waited so long to do this...No hang ups whats so ever. I recommend everyone to do this now that the ram is so cheap.

would there be some speed differences?

anyone use this on their mbp 4,1 currently?

You'd still be stuck with a SATA I connection which is somewhat slow. A good SSD could probably max it out, so you'd better put it in the hard drive bay which has SATA II.

If you dig a bit on "that auction site" optical bay adapters are available, though you won't get the speed bump.... they are more for extra storage.

I still use my early 2008 2.4C2D MBP for lighter duty stuff. The 2011's render video (and everything else) 3X faster.

I've been offered an early 2008 MBP 17" for a good price. Its got 4gb RAM in which I'll max to 6. Re the SSD could I put the SSD(80gb)in the main drive bay and then the original drive into the optical drive slot?? That way I'd get the SSD boost as I'd be using it as the main boot drive and then the additional drive as extra storage.

I've been offered it for £250 which although it's an old generation I think it's a cracking price, I'd mostly be using it for music software and a bit of djing.

IF that's all you're going to do with the computer, why upgrade with a SSD at all?

Well if the laptop is fast enough without it then maybe I don't need it. Have read a few posts on here that suggest that these old MacBooks are slow.

They aren't. People get caught up in specs and in their own spending that they don't stop and actually think of the validity of what they're saying.

I need a SSD
I need at least 4 gigs of RAM
C2D machines are slow
C2D machines are too old.

That's what we have all been using a year ago. And it's like people flip out when something new comes out, get it, then think that it HAS to be that way when it simply does not.

Don't get caught up in the hype; a lot of people here, sadly, just blindly follow others and spread their opinion as if it holds actual weight.

so bottom line is, if i decide to get an ssd.. put the ssd into the main hd slot, and put the current hd into an optibay.

seems like the best thing to do, plus i dont hibernate my mbp ever

That's what I'm going to do. It's easiest to backup the current HD, pop it out, put the SSD in, restore through TM or whatever, then pop the old HD back in and format it, then use it for media.

Personally I don't need more than 128gbs (what I'm planning on getting) but I have no use for the optical drive, so it's really all benefits. And if something breaks or you need to send it in, simply pop the HD out, put the optical drive back in, and replace the SSD with the HD and you're good to go.

How does lion run on early 2008 MBP's??

I don't have it yet but my friend which is sitting next to me right now with a MBP 3,1(I have a 4,1) is saying it runs flawlessly, and he's pretty anal about speed.

Excellent!! This will be my first proper mac(messed around with a hackintosh ages ago!!) so can't wait to get stuck in!! This will be replacing a crappy dell inspiron so hopefully this will be an upgrade!!

SSD in main slot?

Isn't it better to run the SSD from the optibay, in order for the HD (spinning platter) to be able to continue to utilize the motion shock protection?

Most hard drives have that built in. The one in the MBP is extra precautions only.
