Hello everyone,
My cousin gave me his MacBook Pro to look at. He has OS X Mountian Lion 10.8 installed on his Mac. It stopped booting up suddenly. (Just the Apple logo, kept spinning, etc). I connected the MBP to my iMac via Target Disk mode and all his files look fine. Disk Utility found nothing wrong when I repaired the disk. Repairing permissions didn't seem to help it boot either.
I tried booting to his primary partition (Macintosh HD) and the 10.8 Recovery partition on his MacBook with no luck. On the primary partition I end up at an Apple logo forever, maybe a gray screen afterwards on some boots. On the recovery partition I eventually end up at a blue screen with faint black stripes.
I also tried to boot his MacBook Pro off of a FireWire external HD with OS X 10.7 and OS X 10.8 install images. With 10.7 it sat at the Apple logo (Maybe the OS was too old), for 10.8 it would eventually land on the same blue screen that the 10.8 recovery partition showed.
My guess is this is maybe a hardware issue, possibly graphics card related? I can't seem to get the Apple Hardware Test to run, although maybe I'm doing it wrong. I tried hooking up the MacBook Pro to an external display via a DisplayPort to HDMI adapter, but I couldn't get an image on the TV. (Same adapter and cable worked fine on my '08 MBP however)
Any help or advice would be great, thanks! 🙂
