Hey all- I'm new here and looking for some advice regarding my early 2011 MBP, 15 inch randomly rebooting. It has actually done this for years but recently it seems to do it more often. It seems completely random, in that I have found nothing that triggers it. Other than that, it runs like a thing of beauty. I've searched all over the internet and have been unable to find any fix that works for me. I have been saving an "error log" for the last couple of weeks, thinking it may help someone assist me. This is the 2011 MBP with the dedicated video card. It does not seem to be a heating issue, because it doesn't seem to matter how long it's been running or whether I'm playing a video game or simply have a single word document up.

Caveat: On one occasion (out of probably hundreds over the years now)- the reboot occurred right after I unplugged a usb mouse.

Caveat: When I used to run windows via bootcamp- I didn’t seem to get any forced reboots.

This is what I've tried so far:

• Reset PRAM and SMC
• Replaced RAM (I did this mostly just as an upgrade- but it has had no effect either way)- went from 4gb to 16 gb.
• Turned indexing off.
• Turned the option of “automatic graphic card switching” off.
• Reinstalled the OS.
• Made sure all updates were installed.
• Maybe other stuff which I can’t think of.

I’m pretty desperate at this point. I need my laptop for work. I feel like I’m going to be forced to go purchase a new 13 inch macbook air. (I guess there are worse things, but this mbp runs so great otherwise- I’d hate to gie up on it) It would be difficult for me to take it into a shop as I have confidential data from work which I fear would be difficult to purge. And frankly, I can’t afford to go a week without this laptop.

I apologize if others have posted about similar problems. I’ve searched and have tried everything I found which seemed inside my ability level.

Any other thoughts? I can copy and paste the error log I’ve been keeping (or part of it).

Thanks all,

Josh

Your computer could be affected by the graphics card failing on those models. It is a known issue that has yet to be acknowledged by Apple, unfortunately.

I thought that could be the issue. But wasn't sure since everything seems to works fine. There also doesn't seem to be any "graphical hiccups".

I thought that could be the issue. But wasn't sure since everything seems to works fine. There also doesn't seem to be any "graphical hiccups".

I had the 8600GT in my 2008 MBP fail me, and I never had any graphical hiccups either. But I'd get kernel panics, random reboots and freezes.

2011 MBP 15 would have ATi graphics thus not affected by the known nvidia issue.

I suggest OP running memtest86 to see if this could be the issue.

There is a fairly common issue with the ATI GPUs in the 2011 MacBook pros. Apple hasn't responded with any kind of a fix, but it seems to be happening more often.

Solutions? Can I replace my graphic card? I think I still need someone to look at my error logs.

On about 99% of laptops, the graphics card is part of the mainboard or logicboard. It cannot be switched out by itself. Either you replacing the whole thing (which is costly) or you live with it.

I appreciate people chiming in. I really think I'm going to have to replace. It seems to be getting more common. Maybe someone can look at this log for me? (I have many more saved if it would be helpful) Thanks in advance.

This is me throwing in what I can gather from that crash dump... but everything there seems to be saying you're suffering an audio issue that's causing a panic-shut-down rather than a kernel panic - the presence of MCE Reporter indicating that the computer is making the decision to halt, rather than being forced to halt.

More than that I cannot tell, I'm afraid.

I'm using kext wizard now (first time ever) but it doesn't seem to show those particular "kexts"... help?

----------

I was wrong- it does show two of them. The avatron ones. How do I delete them though?

Okay- I deleted them (just like you would any file)- then "rebuilt the cache" w/ Kext Wizard. For some reason- I didn't see the razor one... weird. If this works- I'm going to kiss you guys. I know what the AVA ones had to do with. Says they were installed back in 2012- which I can believe.

Sigh- I thought was in the clear after deleting the kernel extensions related to AVA. (both of them). I just had a reboot and got the below. Can anyone suggest anything else? Thanks in advance.
