I have send the team of DOSBox an email and asked them what they will do when there is only Apple Silicon and no longer Intel. Unfortunately I didn't get an answer.
Just because they haven't had any regular releases since 2018 and since 2018 the only two releases were minor bug fixes in 2019 and 2021. Nothing has been officially announced... it's just dead in my opinion.
Both DOSBox-x and DOSBox Staging were forked from the main project in response to the main project releases falling off and both have are very current and under active development.
If you want to go beyond just DOS emulation and get really down in the weeds of x86 emulation, 86Box is awesome too. It's basically like building your own vintage PC part by part, with all the complexity and frustration that can involve:
