Because there's more to a computer than raw CPU benchmarks. It's the thinnest MacBook product, the lightest, has a Retina display, and an extremely fast SSD storage.

That's what makes it a 2015 notebook. It is over priced, but not dramatically.

Why do people insist on ignoring the fact that it is bloody fanless?
Not only does it make it quiet and pleasant to use, it makes the laptop extremely reliable, and the performance won't degrade over time due to bad airflow and throttling. It's a huge thing for laptops.

Hmm...I seem to remember Steve Jobs pulling a MBA out of a manila envelope and crowing about how thin it was. Can you tell me in what way(s) the 2008 MBA was better than the rMB? I can't think of any.

Sure, that's easy. It had an 80gb spinner -- oops, wait. It had 2gb of RAM! Uh, sorry. Wait, I know! It had a $1800 price tag!!! Hmm, let me think. OK, it's 150% of the weight? Ummm, it had...never mind, the battery life was $hi7.

Ok, you win. ;)

This is one of the most attractive draws for me because I don't have to worry about blocking the stupid vents. I don't like using my MacBook Pro in my lap, on the bed, or really anywhere accept a table because the vents are on the sides and I don't want to restrict the airflow.

The fanless design will enable me to use it in more places and in more positions than the current MBP. I can use it more like an iPad, but with more power.

2015 13" Macbook Pro with Retina for me then.

I can't justify the RMB price when the other machine is sitting there for the same price.

Get. Rid. Of. The. Frickin'. Audio. Jack.

Aww, but I use it all the time. :(

Can there be a 3.5mm to USB-C headphone jack? I don't want to buy bluetooth headphones when I have like 5 decent pair of wired headphones already.

Don't quite get the hate of this machine. I think it's gonna be an awesome consumer product for the right (most) person. This is coming from a rMBP 15" kinda guy. I only need my pro for my work related statistical programs etc...and plan on using the new 12" Macbook for my primary use outside of work.

You're right exactly (about the product being a great fit and fantastic product for some people), but sadly this forum attracts in growing numbers each year far too many people who believe this isn't a discussion forum but rather a great big wall from which you derive life value points for posting ignorant complaints. It's so sad, this could be a very interesting thread to discuss this product, but once again it's been hijacked and MR prefers the degeneration into tit-tat arguments as well as pointless and ignorant posts.

Think of it this way... If a person with a 2010 macbook wants to replace their machine, they can decide whether they want a much faster computer for slightly lighter. Or a computer slightly faster and much lighter. If you think of it that way, I think Apple has got it right. We have reached a point for many people where speed is becoming irrelevant, Apple has realised that before the industry yet again!

I don't get it. Why are so many people whining? This machine is for someone who wants a computer to do email, web surfing, watching videos, listening to music, word processing, photo viewing, etc. It's a machine for the 90% of Mac users who don't do video encoding, photo rendering, video editing, etc. If you're in the 10%, this machine isn't for you. If you're in the 90%, it's a great ultra-portable with 100% of Apple's design efforts going to thin an light.

Stop whining. I didn't whine the last time they released a 5 pound macbook pro saying how silly it was that they had all those ports that are of no purpose to me for MY usage.

Then it shouldn't cost (at a starting price) $1,299.

Ahem...did you click the link?

Stay powered longer: With up to 15 hours of run time on the FHD display (and 12 hours on the QHD+), it’s leading the industry in battery life. Paired with the Dell Power Companion, you get up to to 22 hours and the freedom to power all of your bonus devices.

Sorry, not interested in marketing materials.

I actually sold my 2013 MacBook Air in anticipation of getting a new MBA with retina display.
I figured the rumoured 12" retina screen was for a new Retina Air.
Obviously I should have waited to see what Apple was going to actually release before getting rid of what was a really good machine (excepting the behind the times display).
This new MacBook just doesn't do it for me. Seems like a lot of money for rather mediocre performance.
May look into a Surface Pro 3.
When configured with i5/8 gb RAM/256 gb storage it comes out cheaper than a 13" MacBook Pro spec'd out the same, even including having to buy the Surface Pro type cover.
About C$320 less, if I'm figuring it out correctly.

My mid-2011 iMac with an approximate 2700 Geekbench 3 score is much faster. Admittedly not an equal comparison but for any 4 year old stock mac to beat a new mac is surprising.

Especially considering the fact that your iMac is smaller, lighter, more portable and has a retina display. Oh, wait...

But it's so thin and light and portless!

This seems to be a new trend with Apple (and I've noticed it with other tech companies too): new products with either marginal performance improvements, or older models outperforming them.

Laughing all the way to the bank.

I think a lot of people here are missing the point.
These are Apple's business machines. Pages, Office, etc.
People keep thinking this about power. Why? It's about portability.. An iPad with full OSX. If I wasn't into video or heavy audio, I'd buy one in a heartbeat.

If I'm only doing stuff the vast, vast majority of computer users are doing, why would I want to pay pro level pricing for a consumer level laptop? The math doesn't add up for me.

Because it will help Apple make even bigger profits, and that's all that most consumers care about. :D:D

People touting the portability of the new MacBook are forgetting how much stuff you're going to have to tether off of that single USB-C port, including powering/charging the thing...

Aww, but I use it all the time. :(

Bluetooth, man. Come on, the whole karma here is wireless-ness. I'm not pulling your chain and I'm not being funny. Apple is dragging us kicking and screaming into their vision of the new world. Maybe we follow, maybe not, and if we don't they'll have to double back. But come one, it's 2015. Why are we still plugging $0.03 wired earbuds into a computer??? ;) :)

Meh

All the more reason to wait for the 2nd gen MacBook. Hopefully then Apple will also upgrade to a 720p FaceTime camera as well.
