I am looking for a very well laid-out reader and am thinking about buying Early Edition. Thoughts??
A friend of mind has Early Edition and it seems pretty cool, as long as you don't expect it to act like a traditional RSS reader (I think it populates the pages dynamically, you can't really mark stuff read...I think.) still it's a neat idea and it's an app I may pick up
Overall I like it. The developer is responsive, and said he had several of the suggestions I made in the pipeline. Here are the only negatives I have found:
1. No back button in built-in browser.
This is the most important deficiency. If you follow a link when using the built in web browser there is no way to go back. Even worse, if you hit DONE at the top to go back to the paper and try to hit the link to the story again (thinking it will get you back to the original page), you end up trapped on the same page with still no way to go back. This alone makes Google News feeds almost useless. Pick your Google News link wisely - you will only be able to follow one link!
2. iTunes store links don't work in the built-in browser.
3. It needs some feed management options. Grouping options alone would make it a thousand times easier to navigate.
4. Google Reader integration is also sorely missed.
While it may sound like I'm bashing it pretty hard, I'm really not. Overall I do like the program. Everything in my list above is supposedly in the works for the next release. And it is a beautiful way to display your feeds.
I like Early Edition. It's like a newspaper!
The first version was buggy but after the update is really nice
anyone know when the next version of Early Edition ( v1.1 ) is due out? Sounds like it will support Google Reader and grouping of feeds...
I think I read an RSS feed this morning saying about 2 weeks.
Also voting for early edition. Just bought it last night and was loving the newspaper style of the app.
It really - for the first time - felt like a digital version of a print media source. And the fact that you can cater this news paper to news you want to read, it's pretty darn fantastic and I can't wait for the updates!
Bought Early Edition last night and so far it's pretty cool. It would be nice to be able to control how the feeds are presented/grouped on the pages ( ie., which feeds show up on earlier pages vs. later pages ), but it is still a pretty solid reader... and I think the 1.1 update will make it even better!
