Would be nice to see an alignment between iOS, iPhone & Axx Chips in the iPhone

Example, iPhone 18 running iOS 18 on a A18 Chip and have that consistency going forward, associating a chip and software release with a specific year and model

Very cool findings! Consecutive DRAM increase on iPhone has occurred before. In 2014, iPhone 6 shipped with 1GB. The following year iPhone 6s doubled it with 2GB. One year after, iPhone 7 Plus had 3GB.
Nah, you can’t actually compare the plus models with dual camera with the regular ones, and for that matter, the regular iPhone 7 and 8 remained at the same 2GB of RAM.

An Apple research paper on making better LLMs for iPhone may point to 10GB, particularly with the 16 Pro rumored to be heavily AI focused

Do you (all) think this memory bump to 10GB will only happen with the Pro models? I know it’s the most likely move from Apple, but if both phones carry the same SoC for economy of scale, the sensible move would be to include the same RAM.

You can rightfully compare them. Let me fix it then: iPhone 6 Plus (1GB) ➡️ iPhone 6s Plus (2GB) ➡️ iPhone 7 Plus (3GB). All bumped up consecutively.

This leak is the first big letdown, with no ULTRA mentioned in the source code. Next years iphones may be another s year.

The iphone is long due for a design overhaul. Having waited for long I may as well hold onto my current iphone, until the iphone 17 pro max with the rumoured circular cutout like andriod phones is released.

IMO iPhones work very well for a billion users and are not "long due for a design overhaul."

Weird that they would segregate their past chip convention by keeping the base iPhone 14 (A15) using the chip from the iPhone 13 (A15), then follow a similar path for the iPhone 15 (base uses A16, Pro uses A17 Pro), only to move back to using a single chip for the iPhone 16.
Maybe they couldn’t produce enough to support four different models at the same time? The pandemic and supply issues may have also had an impact? The N3E process (A18) could just be a “return to normal” for Apple and TSMC. The next Apple TV 4K and 7th generation iPad mini will probably get the A18 as well.

I’m surprised, and disappointed that they are keeping the poorly selling Plus around another year instead of bringing back a nice mini for those who are now looking at a three- or four-generation gap since they got their mini.
I am guessing it's a combination of the plus iPhone still selling better than the mini iPhone, as well as the former having a higher profit margin (Apple is able to charge a higher price by virtue of it having a larger display).

Should be Ax for base models and Ax Pro for Pro models from next year onwards. Expecting larger screens for the Pro models.

They only did that for two generations of phones, 14 and 15 lines. They should get back to using the same generation chips for the entire lineup like they have been for years.

It would be great to see iPhone 16 and 16 Plus, iPhone 16 Pro and 16 Pro Plus all get the A18, and then the new iPhone SE get the A17. But I doubt that'll happen.

So now that I have my iPhone 15PM, excited for the iPhone 16 PM.

However, I thought apple was doubling down on leaks, but it seems the leaks have been doubled down on.

Well look at it this way, we've had the so called pro analysts get some things VERY wrong this year, and last year too, and let's not forget that Apple Watch Series 7 total redesign they all promised. So Apple must be keeping some things under wraps? Not many though. I await to see how much they say will be true of the next Apple Watch.

Apple chips are already so advanced for what they do, that I doubt this will have any noticeable benefit for an average user.

As Apple appear to have a creative pause with their iPhone hardware design since iPhone 12 (and no, removing SIM trays and adding extra buttons on the side do not count 😉), I would much rather prefer they surprise us with something big and fresh with iOS 18.

I also think that iOS 18 will be a bigger release (like iOS 5 and 8 were) to accompany the iPhone 16. In 2022-2023 Apple definitely prioritised development of visionOS and Vision Pro.

That sounds right.

Given that most smartphone brands are wary of producing smaller phones, it seems that people who demand a mini are a vocal minority.

(There are social factors to this. For example, I imagine minis are only interesting to men, because women wouldn't have sufficient pants/dress pockets regardless. They use a purse either way. So that advantage of the mini already goes away for ~half the population.

Then there's the app UI factor, which is a chicken and egg problem: if few people buy minis and few smartphone brands offer minis, few app developers bother targeting a mini's screen estate.)
