thats funny because my school, which is the largest commuter school in the Mass state university system, will straight up cancel for like 3 inches of snow.

they closed at noon today. I am so glad my first class was scheduled for 12:30 :D

didn't even have to leave my house ;)

Umass Boston possibly? i'm jealous. i was told by upperclassmen that my school had one snow day last year and it was a pretty much a waste because it didn't snow. i checked up on it and the high school i went to has had 6 snow days in the amount of time that my college has had 0. ridiculous.

edit: thought it was funny that all the commuter students are sending out mass emails to other students saying that our school is trying to eliminate commuter students, it's plausible :p.

We didn't have school today (Tuesday), purely because the school knew the buses wouldn't be done with their afternoon route before the snow hit.

Another thing to consider with school ending early is lunch - once those lunch ladies start cooking, nobody's going anywhere until the last lunch is served. At my high school, the last lunch isn't over until either 1.15 or 1.45, depending on the day. By then, it usually isn't worth it to send us home early...the roads won't get that much worse in an hour or so.

It all, as my US History teacher tells us every time there's possibility of bad weather, depends on whether or not the Big Yellow Bus™ can get to school without harming the little children sitting inside them. If the bus can go, school goes, and without much regard to the student drivers.

edit: We're now up to five days off from school(including Wednesday), we have no days built in, and thanks to Indiana State Law, we have to make up every last one. We're already going to have our seniors coming back to school after graduation.

As for the kids getting home early i am going to assume MOST do not have parents there or are old enough to be home by themselves for a while any how. Reason for that is most kids beat their parents home every day any how or are at a day care of some type. Lastly even the parent is normally home the kid should still have a key to the house to get in so not as big of an issue. Key is that just in case.

I'm talking about the K-5 elementary school set, < 10 years old. They take the bus, but are certainly not old enough to sit around by themselves or be trusted with a key. My seven year old would lose his head if it wasn't attached.

FWIW my elementary school boys (7 and 9) usually go to after-care at the school, but in case of early closure guess what's not available?

bridgewater.

With all the ice, I'd bet a ton of power wires went down. Plus it's so cold, demand must be through the roof.

As hot as it gets here in the summer, our peak demand is typically in the summer, not the winter. Many houses heat with gas, but everyone's AC is electric.

The power company is confirming that it really is rolling blackouts, which is very puzzling - I've lived here 16 years and never had them before, not even in summer.

You can live without AC (as unpleasant as that may be) but you need heat.

The electric grid is national in scope. Very possible that the storm (it hit 25+ states) is effecting supply in many places.

So, it's day two of no school...

Here in North Texas the roads have been horrible. I mean, it must be really really really bad for my school district to close! Even when Dallas closes, we still go.

Also, the blackouts suck. I woke up this morning to a UPS going off, and the thermostat at 58. So, Texas can't handle cold weather but can handle 105 just fine? Something is fishy here... :apple:

It's not supposed to be above freezing here until Friday afternoon-somehow I get the feeling that I'm about to have the rest of the week off.

Here in Toronto the media blew the storm out of proportion ( as usual, of course ).

Schools closed in Toronto - first time since 1999ish. We only had 15cm over night, nothing special. The area was supposed to get up to 30cm in the surrounding area.. but that rarely happens in Toronto - always less that forecast.
