I've just been offered an early upgrade to the iPhone XR.... should I do it? I'm currently using an iPhone 8 Plus and have no issues with it. There's nothing to pay upfront and I can swap 2 months early. Plan is about the same in cost but less in data. 10GB and I now have 20GB (which I don't often use tbh). Anyone have any real grievances with the XR? I really don't want to splash on a new phone in Jan so would either be keeping this as is or just swapping to something in a similar plan price bracket. Thoughts? Thanks in advance.

I have the iPhone XR and I love it. The body of the iPhone XR looks smaller than the 8 Plus but the XR screen is taller due to the removal of the Home button. The only small issue for me was getting used to the lack of the Home button, but that was quick and easy as I learned how to use the new gestures.

Thanks for the quick response. Mmmm I'd actually forgotten about the home button thing. I guess it's like anything, you get used to it over time. Glad the screen size is okay. I do a lot of work on my phone and have always enjoyed the screen size of the 8 Plus.

My only question would be do you like/use/need the telephoto lens, because the XR doesn't have that. Other than that, I think the XR is fantastic. My son has it.

I have been using iPhones since 2012, I believe the 4S was my first iPhone. The Home button was always there and I was a bit nervous that the new phones didn't have that button. But, I was quite comfortable without it in about a week.

don't think I need that lens at all to be honest. I probaly use my ohone for photos very little.

That's reassuring. I am getting very tempted!

Well, let me tempt you some more, lol. If you accept this early upgrade to the iPhone XR.. will you be able to return it if you don't like it?

I can't stand having to use a home button when I pick up my wife's 8+, I keep trying to swipe up. I really love Face Id and the all screen display is nice too.

Yep, you really do get used to not having the Home button. I can't imagine ever having to go back to it now.

I’ve had my iPhone 11 since launch and still mash my screen looking for the home button. Started with the 2007 OG model.

The XR is a monumental upgrade over the 8 plus. The 8 plus is a dated surfboard, whereas the XR is a modern phone

Knowing this, I would probably say it's safe to switch to the XR. You will be losing the telephoto lens and will also lose the ability to take portrait photos of non-human subjects, such as pets and flowers. You will, however, be able to take selfie portraits. Doesn't seem to matter much in your case.
The other major difference was stated already (FaceID and no Home button) but I'm sure you will get used to this very quickly.

XR is a great phone. I got one back in April. Recently gave it to my wife because she was on her last leg with the 6s Plus, it was either new battery or upgrade.
So I let her try my XR out while I handled the 6s Plus and I haven’t seen it since lol.

The Twist, I used her upgrade and got another XR, but after 10 days, I went back to the plus model. I got a good deal on a new 8 plus. I missed the width.

XR has the new gestures, Face ID and taller screen and a great battery life, and the selfie portrait mode is good too.

I just didn’t realize how small, width wise, the XR was compared to the Plus model.

You will enjoy the XR if you do upgrade but I believe you said you like to read a lot on the Plus model. You might miss that part of the screen, the width of the Plus screen. Have fun with your choice.

wasn’t the home button a point of failure? My wife had the button replaced on her
iPhone 6s on 2 occasions. For me, I love the gesture instead of the button. The button was mechanical - it can eventually fail.

Yes, I do remember hearing that the Home button was a point of failure for many people.

Hey guys - just jumping back on this thread after a while. I ended up going for an iPhone 11 in the end. My partner just updrade to one and it looks great. I've sorted out my upgarde now. The early upgarde thing also meant handing over a wedge of cash too unless I went for a plan that cost more than my existing one and I didn't really want to do that.

I did see the rumoured 12 in navy but I avtually don't think I can wait for that.

Anyway the iPhone 11 will arrive tomorow so I will keep you guys posted. Here's to not too much trauma on losing the Home button... o_Oo_Oo_O

Great choice. I've had the XR for over a year and it is fantastic, and the 11 is basically the same other than having a better camera so you should be happy with it.
Very much doubt you will miss the home button; I got used to it within a couple of hours and once you do you realise what a waste of space it was (FaceID is far superior to touch, imo which renders the button pointless).

Another downside of the button is that if you have it replaced the TouchID no longer works, something which happened to my wife's phone recently and it is highly inconvenient having no touch or face ID.
