Doodle jump is the exception to the rule though. Most apps on the store sink quickly into obscurity instead of rising to the top 20, and an obscure app makes almost nothing.

If you want to be successful, what you need is:

    1. A good idea. Something that's not been done before, or a way to do it better than anyone else.

    2. An idea that people are actually interested in. I've seen absolutely loads of apps that are completely unique on the store, but of zero interest to people. Those apps disappear very fast because nobody wants them.

    3. Sufficient skills to actually make the app, and make it well enough that people like it. You'll need decent coding skills, decent design skills, and decent UI design skills (as in creating an interface that actually works well and doesn't just look pretty).

    4. Marketing skills. This is critical, unless you have the best app ever (or huge amounts of luck). You have to get your app noticed, or people won't see it, and if they don't see it they won't buy it.

It's not easy at all. The lucky few get rich quickly, but they're rare. Most devs spend a lot of time and effort getting this right - normally the first few apps seem brilliant and feel perfect, then you release them and they go nowhere. You learn from that, and keep improving. Eventually you see one of your apps in the top 20. It might take a while before you start earning enough money to justify the time you spent - but it can be very rewarding indeed when you get there :)
