Notice limited-data

Verizon eliminated its tethering fees for limited-data plans last month, with the introduction of a new suite of "Share Everything" plans. It hasn't charged extra for tethering on the latest iPad, which is the first Apple Inc. device with LTE access

Yes, I get it. Do what you want. I'm not the VZW police, I'm only discussing what I believe is their terms of service.

Big edit:

The bottom line: you can now download whatever third-party tethering apps you so choose on your LTE-enabled Verizon handset. As part of recent pricing changes, users on tiered data plans won’t have to pay an extra fee to use such services. The FCC, however, has not limited Verizon’s right to charge customers on unlimited data plans additional fees for tethering.

See the above. I rest my case.

edit: there may be some unlimited customers with iphone 5s and later, by some stroke who can activate personal hotspot without a fee. I don't know if those customers exist, but this doesn't apply to them either. I have unlimited data and cannot activate personal hotspot without paying a fee.

Off course you cannot on stock firmware.
But if you jailbreak you will be able to and tether for free on an unlimited data plan on verizon and they cannot do anything about it.
If you still don't get it I give up:)

You're only reading some and then stop there but don't see where verizon cannot do anything about 3rd party tethering applications that allow tethering for free.
I don't know, believe what you want.
Done wasting time.

Your understanding is not correct per every article you posted. I give up also. :)

JB for "free" does not make bypass of fee legal in any sense of the word.

Ok tell that to millions of verizon customers that have been tethering for free on LTE devices for years now with no probs.
Their understanding is incorrect:D

As I said, because the system was gamed and VZW has opted not to enforce the t and c, does not mean that in the future they cannot or won't. The FCC explicitly exempted Verizon from not being able to enforce a fee on unlimited customers (said another way the FCC has allowed VZW to collect a tether fee for unlimited customers). So those who jb to bypass the fee, may in the future find a surprise in their bills.

I highly doubt after all this time they will do anything about it now.
That's what makes the verizon unlimited data plans more valuable and people hold on to them like gold:)

Aha, that you said "I highly doubt it" gives a glimmer of hope you do understand vzw has the option of enforcing their t and c. I do not know their internal policies with such matters, but I do know what I read. At some point they may decide to recoup their lost revenue by people who jailbreak to avoid paying their required fees.

With ~50% gross margins they already get, I highly doubt it.

I know about the tired data plans. I wasn't talking about that.
I was only talking about those on unlimited data plans that tether for free.
And verizon cannot throttle or switch their plans due to an agreement with the FCC that states that they cannot touch LTE devices and that customers can install unofficial tethering programs on LTE devices only. They agreed to that when they purchased certain LTE spectrum bands years ago if you remember before LTE was deployed yet.
I might search for a link with further details to show you if you don't believe still.

"What if I have an old Verizon unlimited data plan? Can I download an app and avoid the $20 tethering fee too?
Unfortunately, the answer to this question is no. Verizon says that customers under the unlimited plan are required by the company's terms of service to pay an additional fee to tether their device.
"

I know you said that there are a lot of people who tether for free. But I am more than happy to pay the extra dollars to tether.

I thought about finding an unlimited iPad data plan but tethering is much more flexible and useful.

for some reason, my iPhone 5c says i have to call verizon to set up a hotspot but on my other 2 iphone4s's i can just flip the switch in settings and turn on hotspot even though all of them are on th same exact share everything plan that should give me access to free hotspots (of course i still have to pay the data)

Call up Verizon and they will enable it. If you're iphone is on a share data plan then tethering is included.
