iMovie is going to be your best bet, you should either have it installed or can get it from the App Store. Will allow you to easily add videos together with an audio track.

What software is the 2012 MBP running?

It might be possible to scrounge up an older version of iMovie that will work with an older version of the OS, but I can't say anything more. You'll have to do the scrounging yourself.

Hmmmm... here's which version of iMovie you need for older versions of the OS:
macOS version Recommended iMovie earlier version
macOS 11 Big Sur -- iMovie 10.2.3 (latest)
macOS 10.15 Catalina -- iMovie 10.1.16, iMovie 10.2.3 for macOS 10.15.6 or later.
macOS 10.14 Mojave -- iMovie 10.1.12, iMovie 10.1.13, iMovie 10.1.14
macOS 10.13 High Sierra -- iMovie 10.1.9
macOS 10.12 Sierra -- iMovie 10.1.8 or iMovie 10.1.9
macOS 10.11 El Capitan -- iMovie 10.1.3, iMovie 10.1.4, iMovie 10.1.5, iMovie 10.1.6
macOS 10.10 Yosemite -- iMovie 9.0.9, iMovie 10.0.1, iMovie 10.1.1

You’re running Catalina, while the App Store says you need 11.6, which is Big Sur. Catalina is 10.15. Your Mac is just outdated. I think @Fishrrman above has your answer.

iMovie is free and fairly easy to use.
Read the other posts a bit too late.

Perhaps this will save others wasted hours looking for suitable software to make a video. I was using iMovie 9 on a 2012 i5 Mac Mini, running High Sierra, which was very slow but the resulting video was good when put together with audio recorded separately.

For more speed I migrated to an i7 Mini running Catalina, and of course iMovie 9 won't run. I can't download iMovie from the app store because Catalina is not the latest OS and I went round in circles trying to find iMovie 10.2.3, encountering blocked sites and dead ends.

So, I've just spent £22 ($30) on a version of Movavi which is advertised as the most iMovie-like package. The interface does look very similar, it's a smaller download so you don't wait ages with standard internet, and I can finally move on. I thought $30 was worth the hassle I'm saving.

I hope that's useful for anyone else with older kit looking for iMovie.
