That has absolutely nothing to do with playback of any selected items. Have you been reading this thread?

I was answering (with a different way than other posts) the first post.

This may be the dumbest post in history, but is there an easier way to play a full album in itunes than having to make a separate playlist out of the album or having to check the box on every single track on the album? This seems slightly more complicated than it needs to be, but I can't figure out any other way to do it.

You ARE aware that the original post is over 3 years old and the OP hasn't been on this forum since he asked that question, right? He's not going to see your answer.

You are aware that Mitthrawnuruodo has given a important hint to you in his post:

You need to play the song(s) from Party Shuffle. Either stay in PS and press play, or use the Play next in PS feature.

It doesn't help if you add the song(s) to PS but play them from your library or playlists.

And by the way:

It sounds like iTunes doesn't work quite like Windows Media Player in this respect.

I really hope so.

I understood what he said, that I'm limited to staying in PS, so I can't browse or search at will and still have the songs in PS continue to play, which is the limitation that doesn't exist in WMP.
I really hope so.
If you prefer that limitation, that's your choice. However, I find it very useful to be able to play albums or songs while I work on other parts of my library. With iTunes, I can EITHER let it play what I choose, OR I can search, browse, edit, etc., but I can't do both simultaneously, which I could do in WMP.

OK, I highlighted my whole library and clicked "Check Selection". After waiting 4 minutes for it to complete checking them, I went to View > Show Browser and clicked on an album, then play. So far, so good.

But when it gets to the last song in the album, the only way it will not go to another song in the library outside the album is if I leave iTunes with that album highlighted. In other words, I can't go browse my library, edit tags, update artwork, etc. while the album is playing, because when I do, it plays other songs that are not in the album that are also checked.

Am I missing something?

Perhaps I am missing something here. Do any of you posts indicate you have engaged the browse feature? This creates three columns in a pane on top of the your library list. The columns are genre, artist and album. By searching for a particular artist and clicking on their name, the list to the right only shows that artist's albums. I have found I can cover my 25 G worth of albums much better than scrolling down a huge list of play lists......

Double click on the album you want and away you go. Now, I have no idea if this will work if all of your songs are unchecked in the Library's left-most column. If this does not work you problem exceeds my meager iTunes skills & I apologize for wasting your time:D

Please refer to the post you just quoted.

No problem.

It does continue to play if you've started playing in Party Shuffle.
I also just tried playing a playlist, and I could then go off and browse my library and edit other songs and the playlist continued playing from song to song - even though the playlist was no longer selected.

Anyway, I do know what you're getting at here and I think you're right that this might be a difference between WMP and iTunes. However maybe experiment a bit more - try using playlists and maybe Party Shuffle as your "Now Playing" list.

And so to bed :)

OK, here's what I did. First, I tried selecting the "Abbey Road" album by highlighting the songs, right-clicking to "Add to Party Shuffle", but it wasn't a choice, since none of the songs were checked. First conclusion: Party Shuffle only works if everything is checked.

Next, I checked everything in my library, selected "Abbey Road", right-clicked and chose "Add to Party Shuffle". Then I clicked on "Party Shuffle" on the list of playlists, then I clicked the Play button and it started. While it was playing, I then clicked "Music" in the top left panel to browse my whole library. I then typed "Santana" in the search field, which displayed only Santana songs. When the song playing in "Abbey Road" finished, it started playing a song by Dean Martin, which was neither in the Party Shuffle listing, nor in the search I had just done. (As far as I can recall, Dino never performed with the Beatles or with Santana!) :D

Next, I went to the Party Shuffle, highlighted all the songs, right-click, "Delete".... and the PS list repopulated with random songs from my library! Each time I would delete them to empty the PS playlist, it would repopulate with random songs. Obviously, not what I expected or wanted. I had previously disabled Party Shuffle, and now I know why!

So I'm back to my original assumption: It's much simpler to just highlight what I want to play, check the items and play. I can then check and uncheck songs at will, to add or subtract from the currently playing songs. If a song isn't checked, it won't play, unless I intentionally double-click on that song.

I don't have the hassle of creating, managing, deleting playlists, unless I want to preserve a particular group of songs to play in the future. This seems to be the easiest method, so far.

i find that this is the fastest way to get it my way :)

first of all i changed the arrow behaviour in itunes, you can search the command line on www.macosxhints.com

what this does is: switching the default button behaviour of the small arrows behind an artist or album.

Oh yeah! That's exactly what I was missing in iTunes for years. I will add you to my list of cool people! :D

I Feel Your Pain

Listen GGJstudios, I feel your pain. I have been marvelling at this shortfall in iTunes for about a decade, waiting patiently for Apple to improve it enough for me to do the most basic of operations... e.g. Play an album. - Not a song; an album. e.g. Select songs and play them - without going through the agony of creating, naming, adding songs to and saving and playing another playlist.

I gotta say, I am stunned at the solutions on offer here: Those that make no sense, those that miss the point entirely, those that are insanely ridiculous, those that assume you must be more retarded than they are, those that are complicated and patronising and still don't solve the problem.

I'm afraid that, perhaps thanks to Apple, people don't listen to albums much any more. They just let Genius or iTunes guess what they may want to here - yay!

What does music player software need to do? Not much really: Find music - check. Select music - check. Play the music you selected! - Boom baow...
Oh here's a feature: Play a song and let you queue up more songs WHILE THE SONG IS PLAYING - boom baoww... [iTunes starts playing Neil Diamond randomly....]

If you want to be able do these simple things, use Window Media Player - it has it's problems too but at least it can do those things LOL. Save iTunes for buying music and backing up your iphone.

Apple i love my iphone but iTunes FML.:D

Several ways to do this

Either:
1. Select the album or all of the songs from an album
2. Right-Click -> "Play Next in iTunes DJ"

Done.

Or:

While browsing in "Grid view":

1. Click on the "Play Album" button that appears above each cover on hover.

Done.

In both cases, you can freely continue to browse your library without disturbing playback of the album. I assume your songs are checked of course.

Did you know?

Today I was in a Mac store and I decided to see if I could play an album... and lo and behold: it worked first time! When I pressed fast fwd button :)apple: symbol for “skip” :)) it actually went to the next song in the album instead of some random song that itunes pulled out of its arse. This is amazing, because all day yesterday on my PC running the latest iTunes, it refused to do this – every different method i could think of (And Googling brought me here to no avail)! I cannot see why.. it seems Apple make the PC version of iTunes with the bastard switch fused permanently in the on position. I dunno...

I just found this thread after searching for an answer to the same question.

it is a little ridiculous that iTunes does not have an equivalent to taking one album or CD and just playing it (like you might do in the old, pre-mp3 days)

EDIT: The tip above is what I was looking for. Thanks

doesn't work for me

Not meant to be condescending (well, not much ;) ). You were referring to UI elements that are longer present in iTunes 8 - the previous posts reference a 3.5 year old version of iTunes, whatever that was (4.1?).

If you go to View - Show Browser, you will get a list of albums on the far right. You can click on an album and then play it alone. Easy.

If you don't like certain tracks then by all means uncheck 'em, but unchecking your entire library is a unique way of managing your music. If it works for you then great, just doesn't seem that efficient to me and you miss out on some features of iTunes e.g. shuffle play, Party Shuffle etc.

Even if I click on the album, only the first song plays....over and over (I don't have it on repeat)....

By "don't have it on repeat", I assume you don't have the little icon with the 1 showing bottom left of the screen. Are the other tracks in the album on your computer? If they're stored on a removable disk that's not available, they get skipped. Similarly, if they're not checked in the list in itunes (in list view, the little tick marks in the second column after the track number), they won't play. Any of these relevant?

Sorry to re-resurrect an old thread, but it was exactly the answer I was looking for...except for an older version of iTunes.

I often want to select an album (through browser, or a playlist, etc.) and then, while listening to the album, navigate through the library and update info, etc. However, that always makes the album stop after the current song. I saw above that Party Shuffle would have fixed this, but that seems to be gone. Any new way to do that?

And while we're here:
1. Any way to have your library collapsed to just show an album on a single line, and you can click on an arrow to expand? Seems like it would be easier if everything took up less space.

2. If I run some script to de-Ping my iTunes, will I regain the feature of option clicking the arrow and it takes me to the album featuring the selected track?

3. Any way to have it sort by multiple fields (kinda like it Excel)? I like having the library sorted by date added often, but would like the tracks to be in order for each album. Looks like if you sort multiple times, it doesn't remember the previous sort.

Well, that should just about do it! Thanks in advance for any help!
Brian

whole album won't play

This just happened to me and it had never happened before. The only thing that was different was I had recently unchecked all songs in my library. I went back in and checked all the songs and, voila, the entire album plays perfectly.

itunes is GARBAGE

Ok, as an advanced Windows7 user- itunes is absolutely GARBAGE!!!!!! I am running lion & if your (Apple) going to label yourself as "The most advanced operating system in the world" then you better go in research ALLLLLL the issues with this ridiculous program called "itunes" that apparently can't even play an album unless creating a playlist???? Apple is WAY TOOOO focused on selling(itunes store) rather than creating a better interface between THE MUSIC FOLDER IN FINDER & THIS GARBAGE MEDIA PLAYER CALLED ITUNES!!!!!!!! I would love to read all comments & criticism regarding my posts!

This makes no sense. iTunes is not part of Mac OS X. It is a separate app.

correct me if i'm wrong, ahhhh itunes is most certainly a part of macs operating system as windows media player is with windows. Seems to me Windows7 has a much better interface between folders "PLAY ALL." just WORKS!!!! & heres a grand question for you HOW MANY UPDATES DOES ITUNES NEED TO MAKE TO GET IT RIGHT!!!!!!!!!
