So a bit of a story...

I recently sold my S3 watch on eBay as I got a S4 from the girlfriend for Christmas. The watch sold and was paid for on Christmas. I shipped the watch on Wednesday and it was delivered earlier today. Just about 5 minutes ago I get a message from the account holder that this purchase was fraudulently made with their credit card and that they have contacted eBay.

I am wondering if anyone has any experience with this and how it'll go down. I have heard that eBay basically screws the seller and always sides with the buyer. Is it likely that I will lose the money from this sale? Does the credit card company take the hit? Anyone have experience with this happening?

Follow up question...

The watch was sold with Apple Care+ until February 2020 which I just called and cancelled to get the $26 (pro-rated amount) back from that. I assume the watch is essentially gone for good unfortunately. Is it possible for me to report this watch as stolen through Apple and have them shut the watch down remotely? I would rather the watch be dead than in the hands of the person that essentially stole it. Not sure if that is something they can do or not. Obviously before I sold the watch I wiped it and removed it from iCloud. I do have the receipts from the purchase and can provide those to them.. Just wondering if that is at all a possibility.

Thanks

edit... Ya know what the more I think about this... I kind of wonder if the seller is falsely saying it was fraud.. The watch was purchased very early Christmas morning (25th), shipped around noon on the 26th, and delivered today at 1:15pm. At 5pm I receive the email claiming it was fraud... Just seems kind of convenient that it took them that long to notice the fraud and didn't report it until a couple hours after the watch was delivered....

Yeah, with eBay you’re pretty much screwed.
I don't know if this is seen as unethical or anything.... but I already have withdrawn the money from my PayPal account.. If I was to remove my bank information from PayPal could they still dip into my bank and take the money back?

Not sure. Worth a shot though. The agreement that you checked a box for though may still allow them to dip into an account previously linked to your PayPal account even if you have now disassociated it from your PayPal account. Your only recourse may be to close your bank account too.

PayPal is a bunch of demons. I went many rounds with them years ago. I came out unscathed financially in the end in my battle, but it sure cost me a lot of time and energy to fight them. Never gone back.

Yes, PayPal can still withdraw transactions from your bank account/information, they already know that others will try to Move/close accounts, which is why they have access to that information. If PayPal wants to withdraw the money from your account, they certainly will.

And this is why I don’t sell any Apple products whatsoever on eBay, it’s nothing more than a ‘fraud zone’ to take advantage of Honest sellers, unfortunately now you’re the victim in this situation versus the buyer.

Well see how it turns out. I have in the past sold many Apple products and other items on eBay, but it only take one instance of being screwed out of $240 to learn to never do business with them again. Hopefully it works out, but I do have a bad feeling. Live and learn I suppose.

And I gather you’re being honest in your situation, but this is the unfortunate part when selling Apple products to digital strangers on the Internet who have alterior motive‘s. Unfortunately, with six months buyer protection and eBay, they always seem to side with the buyer, because of all the circumstantial situations.

If you sell again on the internet, Swappa or locally for cash in hand.

If you've shipped to a confirmed address in Paypal and the buyer is verified, you should be covered. You'll get to keep your money since obviously you won't get the watch back.

I've sold many items on ebay and I've ran into this situation a few times. I usually wait a day or two after the winning bid before shipping out, that is usually when the fraud is shown. However, one time I got the chargeback after leaving the post office and ran back and with the help of a very friendly and willing postal worker, he was able to go into the back of the truck and get the package before it shipped out.

I had this happen to me. As long as you sold it through PayPal and shipped it to the PayPal verified address on the account you should be protected under the seller protection you automatically receive. They will debit your PayPal account until it is researched, that took about a week or so for mine then the credited the amount back and told me I was covered.

Except, the OP stated they ‘moved’ funds out of their account, which I don’t think was a wise move with the PayPal investigation team, because PayPal will see that and it makes it look even more suspicious that they’re trying to move/close accounts. Either way, PayPal will ‘Get’ their money, as you can’t remove bank accounts in the middle of transaction or until after so many days I believe.

I almost got into trouble selling an iPhone on eBay a few years ago. The buyer paid, but I just didn’t feel right about it for some reason, so I refunded his money. I never received a negative feedback either, but I was afraid of the same thing happening. I’ll never sell anything on eBay like this again. Sorry this happened to you. :(

Well I haven’t removed the account from PayPal or anything, I was just wondering if that would eliminate the possibility of PayPal being able to dip into my account at a later time.

The only thing I have done is withdrawn the funds from PayPal to my bank account as most anyone would do. I did that early in the day on Friday before I knew about any of this.

I did call eBay last night and the guy I talked to in the seller protection department said I should be okay. He also said he doesn’t see an open case for the item number at the time. So I guess we’ll see what happns. I imagine I won’t hear back until Monday at the earliest.
