Is it really bad if people can see the serial number? Should I black it out? I can't imagine how someone would be malicious with it... "you can check the warranty, oh nos" :D

Just to be safe, you should draw a little black rectangle over the serial number in the picture...
 
It could also cause problems if scammers use your pictures to pretend to sell a similar machine. They could see the person that buys yours has it (somehow...) and...it's just not worth it. :)
 
How hard is to "erase" the serial number in the picture? The amount of time it would take would be insignificant compared to the amount of time it could take to correct a wrongdoing that would occur by having it available.

Erase it!!!

I have had problems with posting the serial before. A guy tried to claim the iBook I was selling was his , I went uh huh that is why I have the box, manuals and receipt for it??? Ruined one of my ebay usernames though...

I have a dob, and a name registered under the law with the council. It forms a public record, for public viewing. If i am not more valuable than a console, I shall go in hiding.

Cars have registration plate on full display, to let other users know and identify them.

Oh come on. You're arguing for the principle of something when someone you're directly quoting had a real-world bad experience from posting a serial number online.
