Sounds like you did everything right, signature upon delivery, tracking number.

eBay/paypal should side with you.

Ebay in these situations will side with the buyer. If the buyer claims he did not get what he ordered or got an empty box they will return his money. Tracking numbers just show a box was delivered - not what was in the box.

ebay will not, for sure, be on either side. They look at lots of factors like the reputation of each eBay member.

Paypal will come and remove the money out of your bank account per your agreement with them if eBay thinks it is your fault!:p

I have no problem with eBay except for the fees! I sold a iPad 2 64 gb AT&T for 1400. I shipped with fedex with tracking number and signature confirmation. When I insured the package fedex checked to see if it was unopened and new in the box before shipping. You guys make a simple thing very hard. Always cover your ass or a shaft will be inserted in it! FYI

The eBay buyer requirement settings are ridiculous. You can't block 0-feedback buyers, only buyers with negative feedback (which isn't even possible anymore on eBay). .

We as the seller can't leave negative, only neutral or positive, but if the buyer wants to be a d!ck, he or she CAN leave us SELLERs a negative/bad feedback, even if everything was as described, with quick shipping....

Here's the thing. You can have done all of those things and still get screwed. All a buyer has to do is a chargeback to his credit card. He will then ship an empty box back to you with a delivery confirmation number. No matter what you say, paypal will side with the buyer. Why? Because the credit card company always gets the money back for the cardholder and paypal will in turn get it from you. Paypal does not care who is right. Their investigations are a joke, they only care about not being the one holding the bag. Adding insult to injury the seller gets hit with a chargeback fee of $20.

I tried to sell my iPad1 on eBay, which resulted in a 0-feedback buyer using "buy it now" and asking me to ship it to Nigeria (despite my description stating that I will only ship it to a Paypal verified US address).

The Nigerian scam seems so common on eBay now and there's not a lot you can do about it. The eBay buyer requirement settings are ridiculous. You can't block 0-feedback buyers, only buyers with negative feedback (which isn't even possible anymore on eBay). You can block buyers registered in certain countries, but the Nigerian scammers just register in the US and ask you to ship to Nigeria. You can require immediate payment, but hidden in there is a Paypal policy which restricts immediate payment only for business and premium Paypal accounts. So, not a lot you can do to prevent someone from ending your auction, incurring commissions, and trying to scam you.

The whole thing is ridiculous. After the 8-day claim process at eBay, I finally got my Final Value Fee (commission) back, but they won't refund my listing fee.

I sold it on Craigslist within 4 hours.

I have a similar issue with a person who bought an iPhone 4 I had for sale. I put on my descriptions "I will not sell to 0 feedback buyers" guess what a 0 feedback buyer bought it. They never responded to my emails and I sold it the second bidder. I am not be charged for 2 auctions. I submitted a claim, and I hopefully I get the fees reversed.

Not sure Craigslist is even slightly more safe

There are certainly scams on either to catch the unwary or incautious. I've never had a bad transaction on either CL or eBay and have used both for many years.

I don't know that I support your statement . Very easy to ensure your safety on CL, but you'll have to walk away from some potential deals when they don't feel right. It's also very easy to be stupid and get ripped off.

Saw a story on the local news yesterday morning about people selling ipad2's on craigslist and meeting the buyer at a local park. The "buyer" would grab the box and run -- this worked until the police set up a sting via a craigslist ad and nailed him. About the only worse seeming-safe place I could imagine meeting someone would be a shopping mall food court; prime setup for a snatch&run theft.

The problem is with paypal. I had a similiar situation few months back when I decied to sale my iPad on ebay.
The buyer even before he received the iPad filed a claimed with paypal that it was not delivered :D
Once I confirmed the delivery was made and provided paypal with the tracking number they finally released the funds to me.
After exactly 1 week I noticed there was another block on my account and my funds had been removed.
The buyer had the money back and kept the ipad. I called paypal like 100 times I was furious. They told me that paypal also requires a signature confirmation that the item was delivered (remember this is very important when selling on ebay, without it you are screwed) and I was responsible to pay back the 450$ to pay pal or they would contact a collection agency. I was at fault because there was no signature confirmation even after I explained to them that the package was picked up from the buyer at the post office and there was proof of that.
I told them that if they think I will sit back and let this buyer scam me and allow you guys to support this behaviour they got something else coming.
Not to brag but I am quite wealthy and I have a lot of time on my hands and with the help of my father I went after this idiots.
First thing I did was contact our lawyer who recommended us a good small litigation lawyer.
I also found the buyer contact number and called them up explaing to him that I was going to take legal actiong against him and paypal and I was about to contact RCMP and open an investigation.
MY lawyer sent a letter to paypal explaing what was going on and that the client was going to take legal action. Two days later paypal contact me and they tried to strong harm me telling me that if I didn't back down from this I would end up loosing a lot of money and pay theyr lawyers feees and blah blah
I proceeded to explain to them that if I have to waste 500K+ of lawyers fees to take you guys to court I will and I will not back down and next time contact my lawyer.
Now what happened is the funny part =) That imbecile of the buyer calls me back and tells me that miraculously he foudn the iPad and the neighbour had it this all time.
At this point my lawyer and I where literary pissing our pants for how hard we was laughing.
The buyer refunded my money that where originally given back to him from paypal and paypal tried to close the case.
Now what the buyer did is pretty much an admission of guilt and I would laugh at him try and produde that neighbour in court to testify that he held is iPad hostage for almost 2 months.
And paypal will be made to look like the idiots that they are.
At the moment I received an apology from paypal and they said they are going to refund me all the expenses of transfering the money to my bank account etc...
My lawyer said that is not enough we are looking for a little more then that.

Moral of the story stay away from paypal do anything in your power not to deal with them. If you sale on ebay never accept returns and try and have the buyer pick up the item.
Lot of people got screwed by paypal and had their funds hold for months at a time. The sad part is the vast majority of this people can not really afford good legal representation to go after this sharks and end up getting scrwed.
But once in a wile when you rip people off you gona run int he wrong guy and he will take action.
I can assure you that once I am done with paypal I will be going on a 10K shopping spree on ebay thanks to them.

Look what they did to this guy lol

I honestly feel sorry for him and I don't know how he can just sit there and do nothing.

There's a reason I always include insurance required.

Oh and I stopped doing ebay.

Not sure Craigslist is even slightly more safe

Less headache with CL. They give me money, I give them package, they open the package and inspect. Shake hand and done.

OP - You are not alone!

I posted on here a week or two ago saying I was worried that I was being scammed by an eBay buyer who claimed their iPad 2 never came. At the time I didn't want to give out any personal information but I was Google searching the buyer's eBay ID to see if anyone else has had problems with them and found this thread!

yenta888 is the buyer who claimed the iPad 2 I sold them never came too. At first I wasn't sure if it was a scam or not but now after reading this thread I'm convinced they are a scammer.

I wanted to post and tell you that you are not the only person this buyer has tried to scam. I'm glad to see you took the proper steps to protect yourself and that eBay sided with you in the case.

Been thnking about this problem for a while now, since eBay upped their commission on sales and also the apparent increase in scams.....Here's what I'm going to do next time I plan on selling something:

Place the ad on Craigs list, but in the ad, say that I have an eBay account that I will give The details of to a good prospective buyer via email. Say that I will only sell to other registered eBay account holders with say 10 or so transactions to their name and with above 95% positive feedback. Get them to verify this by sending me a message through eBay so I can check out their account details. I'll then reply with my ebay account so that the buyer knows its legit. I will also insist on cash for the item, which I will sell from home.

This system appeals to me because it leverages ebay's feedback system without having to pay their exorbitant fees or deal with any nonsense from paypal. You get to check out the buyer and although I'm sure it's not foolproof, it may improve the experience of selling high value items like iPads. I too have a 100% positive rating on a 7 year old eBay account but it's all just to scammy these days.

Hope this helps....if anyone has any suggestions on how to make this system better please let me know.

OP did you get a discount from Best Buy because the box was opened? I bought an open box iPad 2 today and paid full price.

Make that, "Direct Signature" confirmation so that the person on the address label MUST sign for it. "Indirect Signature" means someone else at the same address can sign for it.

You are MISSING to whole point of this thread! Even if the buyer signed for the package there is nothing you can do if he or she claims that there is nothing in the box!

I use eBay for selling small items, not anything that high priced , I use eBay to buy hard to find items.

Stopped using EBay 3+ years ago. It's nothing but a scammers haven with the idiots at Paypal collecting you cash and doing nothing to protect legit buyers and sellers. If you use EBay, if you haven't been screwed... It's not IF, but WHEN it's going to happen.

Craigslist, in person, in a public place, cash deal. Only way to deal.

Not sure Craigslist is even slightly more safe

Craigslist is ONLY safe IF you buy it locally and meet the seller in person. Play with the product and at least you will read more into the seller(honest or scammer)
Otherwise, Craigslist is notorious for fraud!
Why: product is defected or not what you paid for when received.
