@AldenShaw

If you had read the biography you would know that ;

1 Steve did acknowledge the works of others in getting Apple to where it is.

2. There would not be an iPod or iTunes if it wasn't for Steve. He insisted it be great and it was.

I'm glad Jobs got the award. Congrats to him.

But now Jobs is gone everyone else now at Apple has the chance to stand up, be counted and make a name for them self. Cause before anything good invented at Apple was somehow spearheaded by Jobs (even if it was not). Now they can get out of under the Jobs shadow and become a star.

That's if people like Forstall don't do the same thing. And I'm sure with his temperament it's very likely unfortunately.

It's also possible to feel that Apple (and the hundreds or thousands of people who created the Ipod and Itunes) deserve the award....

...but feel a bit odd that it's given in the name of a man who spent much of his career accepting credit for the combined works of many, and not to the group who actually accomplished the feat.

The group was under his guidance and his vision and usually awards are given in the name of a person. A director is getting an award in a film for choosing, organizing and directing a multitude of different people under his vision. More often than not he or she is getting much more credit than they deserve (or the sole credit) for the collective efforts of others. So do generals, so do other ceo's, etc. etc. This happens in plenty of cases, what can we do? Point out in every case this is unfair for the group?

The sentiment of the recent loss of someone fails to touch you though because apparently you are angry with and/or resentful of Jobs and these feelings take precedence. I don't know if you are justified or not, to a lot of people he sure was a prick, and maybe he's getting much more praise than he deserves, and this is getting to you. But he's dead, and he suffered a lot, and people who deserved much less than he did have taken plenty of awards, it shows a modicum of understanding and an appropriate emotional response to not come here like the op and belittle the awards and talk about self congratulatory egos in a thread that has a commemorative element to it. I am sure all this is not that hard to understand emotionally.

On another thread, and when some time has passed I can engage others in criticisms of Jobs, but direct criticism not indirect put downs like the op did. Here, at this time, in this thread, I just don't think it's appropriate to post lightly veiled sarcastic comments like the op did. He did touch the life of many and some respect for his recent loss is what is appropriate imho.

With all this hero worship, it may be years before anyone else gets credit.

Once I read the statement that Jobs had left years of plans behind, for future products, I realized that Tim Cook or any one else for that matter will be lucky to receive any credit for future products.

He 'll receive plenty of credit very quickly trust me if he has the guts to fire a few people from the os x team, and fix the various bugs and half baked "features" in .7.4 and 7.5. He 'll receive even more credit if he spends some of the gazilionths of cash in the bank to hire a few people as well and speed up a release of .8 that might come with a decent file system, an updated finder, resolution independence (or the like) and a bunch of other actually useful features. If he also has the guts and actually adds some choice and customizability to the os instead of the time honored uniformity of practice (that is getting very impractical now that apple has to accommodate so many users from the ios switchers to the longtime ones) he 'll get even more praise. :)

cool search engine link btw, thanks for the heads up.

About ten and a half years ago, when the original 5 GB hard disk iPod was first introduced, Steve Jobs had to endure ENORMOUS criticism that the device was going make the problem of music piracy worse, not better.

But yet, the success of the iTunes Store (original called the iTunes Music Store) may have heavily saved the music industry, and also helped revive the genre of spoken word recordings (especially audio books from Audible.com, now a division of Amazon.com). As such, the Recording Academy wisely chose to honor Jobs, because it iPod helped move the music industry into the modern digital age.

Steve Jobs always said "we" never "I" + i have heard him compliment the team on numerous keynotes

There is a school of thought that without iTunes and iPod, the music industry as we know today would have ceased to exist. That is the school of thought that is behind the award and the industry showing its gratitude to the leader of the company that made it happen. Don't be childish and immature with comments like 'How come it is not given to the engineers?'. This is how things are done, the top guy is chosen to receive the award. Focusing on such silliness and straw-man is quite annoying.

Like another poster pointed out, at least publicly Steve always shared the accomplishment with the group. Almost every Apple keynote ends with him making everyone applaud the people who were on that specific project. Surprised you didn't know that. The example you pulled out is from the biography, and that's indeed Steve cracking the TV or thinks he is (we'll see), which probably wasn't an actual product at the time he said it. But when the final product came to be, and if he were alive to see it, he would again share the final accomplishment with the group.

And the first part is irrelevant. Awards are always given this way. When have you heard that a nobel price being given to thousands of scientists who have contributed to one final result? It's always given to the author of the result. Or an oscar for best picture going to the producer, where it may feel like it should go to the thousands of people who worked in the film. It doesn't mean the other people didn't get recognition though, it's just the nature of the beast.

And in the case of the iTunes store, that certainly was Steve's accomplishment more than anyone else's. He personally pushed it with the record labels and individual artists until he got the deals he wanted and another CEO in his position probably wouldn't have bothered.

Oh wait does that mean if he makes a sandwich it has to be we? I thought you would have assumed that I meant when he created a product. Obviously when he says he finally cracked it he meant he finally got the idea of what to do and the product was not created.

Simple enough?

Now off with you Steve hater
PS. did you notice the entire thread is against you? Maybe you should take a step back before embarrassing yourself further. Go find me a source that says "I" in a product launch and I will give you an apology on golden paper.

I agree. If someone wants fame. Make your own damn company and do it. You can't just get fame if you have skill but no initiative to get there.

eg. you could be a great natural actor but if you don't go audition you never get fame. Just sit in front of the tv wishing it was you.

I agree there is too many people looking for something to whine about on these forums... or just life in general. God help the next generation, their education will suffer big time.

Why Eddie? Surprised that Tim or John wasn't there for the award. Where they at least in the audience?

Who is "John"?

Now off with you Steve hater.

I'm not a "Steve worshipper", there's a big difference.

Usually, yes. But "usually" Grammys, Emmys and Oscars go to performers and content creators. If it's a corporate award, it may go to the corporate leader (for example when Lassetter won a Special Achievement Oscar for Pixar) - but that's usually in line with the giving the award to the head of the creative organization.

If the organization is not creative (and certainly no one can claim that Apple creates entertainment content), the awards can be given to the organization (the 1988 Special Award (Oscar) went to "Eastman Kodak Company", not to "George Eastman").

Why didn't Apple/Jobs get this award when he was alive?

PS. did you notice the entire thread is against you?

If I changed my arguments based on the forum feedback, I'd have to change my username to "Mitt Romney".

...and I'm not alone in disliking the continuing hero worship.

With all this hero worship, it may be years before anyone else gets credit.

The dim photo of Eddy Cue accepting the award that headed up this thread HAD to be taken with a Samsung phone!
