Live sports are the only reason I get YouTube TV. Once college football is over, I cancel until September. YouTube Premium, Hulu, and my free (Thanks, T-Mobile) Netflix is more than enough for me.

Is this a US thing? Because passing live sports rights up is a tragically stupid thing to do! In marketing terms..

Here in the UK Sky spend billions on football rights, because they get it back plus a hell of a lot more due to them.
They have ditched all tennis now, but you can pay Eurosport’s and a TV app for a years subscription to watch them all..

If what people want to watch isn’t available in your platform, when it comes to streaming, they’ll just go elsewhere unless you support an app that does it.

Hmm this seems a bit short sighted by Apple I have to say.

But then again I don’t think Eddy Cue has a clue what he’s doing anyway, he is way out of his league. All puns intended :D

Kobe's 81 point game wasn't in the playoffs...

THANK YOU!

I recall that game .. Kobe Bryant's 81-point b*tch-smack to us in Toronto ... I was at that Game. Funny enough Kobe and Nike when they released the Kobe XI (amazing shoe) had a contest on Twitter saying something to the affect of house 81 points. In less than 3mins the show was found in the Toronto sign in Nathan Philips Square.

Pure talent and yet no attitude. Kobe.

Whatever Eddy Cue says always seems to be wrong. He is like Apple's reverse barometer.

Hmm Apple's Music, WebSite, Store Front, iTunes serious begs to differ all are doing successful and well. iTunes is not perfect and nothing is but it's not an ultimate failure nor is it the wrong choice as you seem to believe.

A lot of tech savvy people seem to use it to my shock... until I got a job and had meetings. Accidentally opening your camera while in PJ’s is scary as ****. However, yea if someone’s streaming with your camera, you’d notice it.

Yeah I've noticed this becoming a seriously hopeless tactic: Even Lenovo built-in a slider for silence mics, and close camera (physically) with a slider in the T480.

Still if you're that kind of person that cannot identify a Camera application over anything else ... you should NOT be using a computer! I've NEVER in 25yrs made that mistake.

If I'm in my PJ's I'm doing one of 3 things:
Sleeping,
Sleeping and just waking up or about to jump in to the shower or,
about to take them off for something a LOT more fun ;)
(Computer does not even come into thoughts in my PJs).

There’s a shock. Maybe apple will create their own sports instead.

yeah, apple wouldn pay for rights but rather they would ask players to pay for gaming and still take 50% from everything sold on the happening.

We still do not know if Apple streaming service will offer any "live" TV (like YouTube TV) or will be limited to pre-recorded content (like Netflix).

Note: none of the computers worked on by Apple staff in the picture are newer MacBook Pros, rather old MBAs. Wonder why?
<snip>
I’m sure for the very same reason customers buy millions every year: they’re the least expensive Mac laptop, yet are still plenty powerful for everything they need to do.

Then Apple would be cutting out sports fans.. Probably not a huge loss, because Apple doesn't care who "leaves" their platforms.. only those who wanna "join"

You never see Apple actually ask you "What can we do to keep you" ...

You hear that of companies like Foxtel all the time. I got the third-degree from them when i cancelled my service..10 mins of babbling by a marketing guy.

I just hope there is something more to this Apple service they are announcing next week. If it is going to be just another Netflix, it's going to be a big snoozefest. We'll see, but I have the feeling next week will be a huge letdown.

I think Apple is missing big time not looking at Live Sports. This is one of the last areas in broadcast where there are huge money to be made.

Everything Apple releases is an attempt to attract/retain and satisfy as many customers and prospects as possible.

And it’s no surprise you would get such a hard sell from a Foxtel retention specialist trying to save a canceling customer; Telstra has just been killing them.

That's another Missed Opportunity by the team of Cook, Schiller, & Cue !

(High-Bit-Rate) 1080p60 streaming is probably the Holy Grail of Live Sports, yet NON-existent here in the States.

Here, we get either 720p60 OR 1080i30.

Those with satellite get 1080p/24-30.

If AAPL was being run by "true" Sports fans, they would have implemented High-Bit-Rate 1080p60 a long, long time ago !

And, it's a MUCH smarter business proposition to spend $1B+ USD on getting into High-End streaming, than arriving late to the game in a competitive video streaming market.

I suspect Cook, Schiller, & Cue ALL have "Hollywood envy" ... otherwise, this wouldn't be happening.

To me, it makes NO business sense.

There are UN-tapped Golden Opportunities out there, & they (i.e., Cook & Co) just try to copy what others have already done !

The root cause of the problem is the Hands-OFF Board Jobs put in place when he took over the last time.

All detailed in the Steve Jobs Bio.

Cook is a Bean Counter, Schiller is there to protect Cook (NO ONE would consider him Cook's replacement), & Cue (I have NO idea why he is still @ AAPL, probably for the same reason Cook keeps Schiller around).

IMO, "the Dumbest guys in the room" are running one of the most valuable companies in the world !

Steve Jobs got what he wanted, & they are running with it !

The hands-OFF AAPL Board gets most of the blame !

Cook should have been replaced about 5 years ago.
Very well said. My man.

I spy one of those crazy people that covers up the camera on their laptop with tape.
There have been a number of zero-day camera access vulnerabilities discovered in the past, serially, so it's not unreasonable. Besides, it's good for when you don't realize you're in a video chat.
[doublepost=1553060912][/doublepost]Apple and others might have a bias. I really doubt many tech people care at all about sports, including myself. March Madness? I forgot it even existed until I heard about it on the bus radio. I do care about the World Cup, but that's not a big deal here.

Also, I like that the richest tech-company in the world uses whiteboards to keep sports statistics to be included in an app...
How do you know that is Apple staff and how do you know when the photo was taken?

On a Mac the green light comes on if the camera is on. There’s no way around that.

Also, who are these people that are on video chat and don’t realize it. Are you guys new to computers? Do you not understand which applications you’re opening and which buttons your clicking?

There have been ways around the green light, userspace software only. https://jscholarship.library.jhu.edu/bitstream/handle/1774.2/36569/camera.pdf?sequence=1

You accept a video call and hide the window thinking it's audio only, or it's Google Hangouts where it's sometimes audio-only but shows your face really tiny when it's video. Or you're like me and have 3 screens at work and don't always see everything on the screen at the same time.

"AAPL". We get it, you took that one summer class in personal finance at community college 15 years ago.

I really think some of Apple's best decisions over the years have been not going into certain businesses. Sure they may have missed out on streaming and social networking, but at the end of the day can any shareholder really complain about their performance as a company? (Same for the TV business - leave the low margins to Samsung and others.)

yeah, to Watch NHL here, it's 3 or 4 packages. thankfully my cable package actually included all the additional ones.

For example: Leafs (my team). games are split between 3 networks. CBC, SportsNet and TSN. CBC games are free for everyone (yay), SportsNet and TSN are owned by two seperate comapnies and require their own subscriptions, and on top of that, if I want out of market games, NHL Gamecenter is a 4th subscription i'd need.

and when the games are on different channels, they get blacked out on the otherse. Can't watch a leaf game on NHL Gamecentre that's on TSN. Can't watch TSN for games on sportsnet. etc.

if you tried to "cut the cord" and do internet only watching, it would cost more than cable!

Sounds... expensive! It seems to be universally a bit of a mess. At least in the case above, you could subscribe to all sports packages with your current provider, I'd have had to switch TV & broadband provider to do so. :(

Likewise, there are internet-based options for getting all the rugby coverage, but have a similar local black-out policy - I can't subscribe to the internet coverage if I'm in one of the countries that has cable/satellite based coverage.

And as if to add insult to injury - because Sky are a satellite TV provider, in addition to having sports channels/packages, they don't offer all their sports channels to other providers in HD, just SD. Even though I'm a paying customer, I can still get a higher quality picture by watching pirate streams online instead of the legal channel I pay for.

I think just about every problem we have with products/services, is some form of "bundling". You want coverage of sport X, you need to get channel Y. You want to watch channel Y, it's only available in package Z. You want package Z, you'll need to switch to provider Z. etc. etc.. Same with programmes and streaming providers. Same with hardware and software etc.

If we could pick any hardware, any OS on it, any internet provider, any streaming provider, and watch any programme on it, there would be no issue. We'd just pick the best of each, and not be tied into inferior products through exclusivity agreements.

Unless Apple is willing to do a 24/7 camel racing / lumberjack competition / luge / bobsledding with full Iditarod coverage channel I have no interest.

(Does anyone actually do camel racing? It seems like it would be a cool sport to watch.)

There seem to be a lot of people who enjoy watching sports and ESPN seems to be doing a good job so just leave it to them.
