That music card thing in the article I thought was an image until I noticed it was interactive....

that's what it is:

nothing new - just in digital and compressed. made already in the late 60's in analog technic.

there was something else and much better - quadrophonic systems. makes much more sense (with speakers).

wtf black magic

I feel like there’s less clarity within this artificial sense of space, but also better separation so it’s possible to hear details and layers that weren’t as readily apparent before.

Still, after listening on the Beats Solo3 and Powerbeats Pro I’m not sure I’m sold on keeping Dolby Atmos automatically enabled. I’ll continue giving it a chance, but I don’t feel like this is the revolution that Apple is advertising it as. I am however ecstatic about having Apple Lossless.

I just read online and if I can check the compatibility, I have to go to Settings, Bluetooth, and click the I next to my airpods to see if I can get spatial audio. I do not on mine. Maybe I'm just confusing Spatial with Atmos?
That setting is for spatial audio for movies, which is limited to Airpods Pro and Max. But music spatial audio is any airpod, plus a plethora of beats headphones. (And you can also force it for third-party headphones too.)

Smart playlists to the rescue. Make one like this:

This list will consist of just files that are NOT lossless. Once you have this list, select all and remove those downloads. Then re-download. Over time, this list will get smaller and smaller.
Now all we need is smart playlists for iPhone, something I have requested multiple times :)

Checking this. AAC audio matches most of my library. I'm looking for Spatial audio. I can't find an attribute that shows that a file is available as spatial or not.

Now that I’m back at my desk and not on the phone, currently, I wanted to try my Plantronics BackBeat Pro 2 headphones to see how they sound using with Dolby Atmos on. Not that they’re some great audiophile headphones, but they certainly have a better, fuller, richer sound than the AirPod Pros I normally use (plus great noise cancellation), so I figured they would be a good way to hear what difference there is.

I’ve had it set as Automatic on my iPad Pro and iPhone Pro Max, but noticed that for other brands of headphones, you need to set it to Always On to get it to play the Dolby Atmos version of songs.

I started playing the “Jazz in Spatial Audio” playlist, and switching over from stereo to Atmos the sound was wayyy better. It was as if I was standing on stage with the band. This is likely do to the fact that jazz has so few instruments and it’s easier for the software to stage the different elements apart, compared to rock, pop, etc. Whatever it is, it sounds awesome and does make me want to get back to listening to more music while working.

It’s also a reminder of just how much better music sounds when you’re listening on a good, or least better, pair of over the ear headphones. That being said, it’s been warm here and these things really do start to heat up my ears, whereas the AirPod Pros don’t have that issue and I even wear them during workouts daily, which I would never do with the Plantronics headphones. Everything is a trade off.

Thats what it actually is - just in a digital version. My Father was an ingeneer (Elektronic) an explaint me that alteady 30 years ago.

I was skeptical but now I’m sold. A lot of the music I listen to is mixed to sound best on stereo speakers, not headphones. Atmos is solving the headphone problem. Instead of plugging left and right speaker signals directly into your ears, Atmos is able to create a sound field that feels like sitting in the sweet spot between two stereo speakers. This is very promising.

I just realized why spatial audio is painful for me now. I love the spatial audio. The past few days, I have been listening only to playlists with spatial audio. This morning I was listening to one of my normal playlists with only stereo songs. The difference is big enough that I can't see having playlists that consist of both spatial and stereo songs. Just like I don't have mono songs in a playlist with stereo songs. So, until almost all songs are available as spatial (which I do not anticipate happening as I listen to "old" music), spatial is very nice but not something that I will use.
