Just received my MacBook and installed the Edge browser. Runs really smoothly.

However, I noticed that the Edge browser has the Microsoft Defender Smart Screen options under Settings and Security.

Since MacOS doesn’t come with MS Defender, how does this detect which downloads may have MacOS related malware in it?

It’s On by default by the way.

SmartScreen is independent from Microsoft Defender, it’s like Safari’s “Warn when visiting a fraudulent website”

Microsoft Defender is available for macOS too

In order for the Edge browser’s Smart Screen to work, do I need to install Microsoft Defender for the MacOS?
