For the longest time since Edge was released on Mac, installing Edge also installed Microsoft Autoupdate and used that to update Edge instead of using an updater internal to the app like Chrome/Brave/Firefox/etc do. Supposedly in app updates instead of the Autoupdate app was a feature that hit unstable builds awhile back but I haven't been able to find anything if this has gone to the stable build yet.

Is Edge still using Autoupdate for updates now?

It's still using it, but it does seem to be much better than when Edge was first released for the Mac. I remember it was always being intrusive and prompting to update Edge. Now I don't see it at all, so something definitely changed even though it's still being used. I had to open the AutoUpdate app to see if Edge was still in the list. (I see Teams is in the list now too...ugh. But again, I don't notice it.)

Here's their blog post about the feature. One comment suggests that maybe it was only completed for Apple Silicon Macs. (I'm on Intel.) The blog post does say it's coming to Intel and Apple Silicon Macs though.
