Edison Mail today announced that it has updated its Mac app with native support for Apple silicon, allowing the app to run faster on Macs powered by the M1, M1 Pro, and M1 Max chips. The new version of the app is available now through the Mac App Store.

Edison Mail first released a desktop app for the Mac in 2019 with features such as One-Click Unsubscribe for junk emails, Block Sender, Custom Snooze, Undo Send, and automatic Read Receipt Blocking to prevent advertisers from tracking your email actions. The app also offers a Dark Mode, keyboard shortcuts, and more.

With a unified inbox, Edison Mail allows you to manage unlimited email accounts all in one place, with supported providers including iCloud, Gmail, Yahoo Mail, Outlook, and many others. Edison Mail also offers apps for the iPhone, iPad, and Android smartphones.

Wonder what the pie chart looks like when documenting all macOS email client usage.
Assume the Mail slice would be disproportionately large, in comparison. But curious to know. Anyone?

While I'm here: I use Mail. Haven't had any reason to look elsewhere. What are the popular non-Mail options out there?

I used Edison for a year or so, and it was fine for my rather basic e-mail needs. However, the app's notifications were quite buggy (notification badge wouldn't update most of the time, every device I used it on had wildly different numbers of notifications), which was a bit of a deal breaker for me. I submitted a few bug reports, but after a year it just kept happening.

I switched to Spark to try something else, and it works just as well.

I use Mail for personal stuff and Microsoft Outlook for work (Office 365) it integrates much better, automatic signatures, corporate apps etc.

I use Spark from default Mail for almost two years and lately it doesn't push mail to me, I have to manually refresh. Other than that I've liked it. I may go back to default at some point though, I can' t really remember why I left it anymore!

Are they routing your email through their servers like other mail apps? I’m using mail.app for personal accounts and Microsoft Outlook for my work email.

I am sure I am missing the bleeding obvious, but what does this do that the bog standard Mac Mail does not do?

I run Mail on my Mac and use it for my iCloud (.Mac), gmail, yahoo accounts. All the emails appear in one window. Separate signatures etc…

So… what does this app offer beyond that?
Last I looked into them they are about simplified security.

I use Spark since last summer as Mail was incredibly buggy during the early betas. Not sure how it is now, but I'm quite satisfied with Spark. I do miss Rules though but that might come in a later update, they said. Not sure when that will be, so might go back to stock at some point.

I feel like I’m the only person who won’t touch third party email programs, only default one on iOS or macOS, seems like my basic needs works well with it I guess

From a Vice.com article link below "The popular Edison email app, which is in the top 100 productivity apps on the Apple app store, scrapes users' email inboxes and sells products based off that information to clients in the finance, travel, and e-Commerce sectors. The contents of Edison users' inboxes are of particular interest to companies who can buy the data to make better investment decisions, according to a J.P. Morgan document obtained by Motherboard."

I tried several third-party mail apps. Have 10 email accounts, so wanted to sync the configurations. Spark was the best, but only on Mac/iOS. As a Windows and Mac user, good old SMTP and Mail.app on Mac, Outlook on PC is still the best way to go.

You're not alone.

I use only the Mail and Gmail apps on my iPhone & iPad (my work & personal email accounts are with Google). On my Macs, I only access email from the gmail website via safari.

I imagine that the more reputable 3rd party mail apps are mostly to very safe. But some of them have been hacked, with user information compromised. Including Edison Mail, if I remember correctly.

I use Canary. I love it. Super simple to use, encryption and read receipts with it.

For all those talking about how the stock app meets their needs…Apple Mail meets all of my needs except one. Why can’t they just add “mark as read delay after x seconds”?? I used to use a plug-in called “TruePreview” I think was the name? But that was many OS releases ago…and no longer supported.

It’s exceedingly frustrating that every mail message gets marked as read if they are toggled past or clicked on by mistake. Outlook allows this function, and Apple Mail used to by function of 3rd-party plugins.

Anyone know of a solution for me on Mac? Either through Apple Mail or alternative E-mail client? This would be huge for me. Thanks!

I use ProtonMail. It is safe, secure, private and no spam gets through.
I don’t trust Google/Gmail and this works!
  • End-to-end encrypted email with other users of the service.
  • Can password-protect messages to non-users.
  • Securely displays embedded images.
  • Message expiration.
  • Secure calendar and file storage.
  • Free tier available.
