iPad Editing text with the pencil

I bought a pencil to use with my iPad. I opened the Notepad app and started writing… then I figured out that I needed to pick the pencil with an A on it, and then it would perform text conversion… which worked really well!

But is there a set of gestures to use to delete the last letter or word, or just plain backspace?

using the pencil, and scribble-scratch over the last word to delete it, is not an option? Similar: draw a vertical line before any letter in a word to introduce a space, then scribble-scratch the letter/part you do not want. -> Apple’s Overview on entering text with scribble
