I am a retired teacher. I loaded in my cart and could checkout a MacBookPro 16" with $200 discount for pick up at local Apple Store. Will they ask for proof of employment or anything like that? Thanks

theres no check online, but are we sure they dont ask to see student id or similar in person for pickup?

If you buy in store they will ask for proof. If you buy online with pickup in store or ship to home, there is no proof required.

Sometimes I've had to show educational ID, sometimes not. I would guess it's policy that employees are supposed to check every time, but don't do so.

I bought 3 Macs with the Education Discount and was never asked for a student ID. I did order all 3 online though for instore pickup.

ITs apple's worst kept secret, but they've also paired back the discounts over the years. Back in the day, the education discount was meant for students and the discount was significant.

Every time I have ordered a Mac under the education discount and pick up in store they always asked for my school ID, back a few years back I asked the rep that sold me my iMac bout why there is no check online and he told me all they have to do is “check a box” to verify the person presented the school ID while they are processing the order and he said some stores were more picky then others. I guess an employee could loose their job for not checking but then again do they really want to loose a multi thousand dollar sale over $200 dollars.

While I am a student, the rep did not ask me for my student id (or bursar semester receipt) last weekend. I offered to show him the bursar receipt too.

Or you could go into the Apple stores with a 10% price match, ask nicely and Apple will grant that instead.

its available for people in education who wont have an id based on their position, so they really cant check it even if they want to.

honestly, who cares. the discount is the same as apples black friday discount, which is available to anyone, and is less than amazon sales etc at certain times.

if you want to spend $200 more, go ahead.

They don't ask for EDU or Federal employee discounts (in store they do, but only if you didn't buy online. You can buy online and pickupn no issue)

The discount is minor though - about 6.5%. Which nicely covers tax in some states

I picked up my mac in store and they didn't do any sort of verification.

Which is why I took the educational discount and drove half an hour to Delaware to take advantage of their lack of sales tax :)

The education discount extends to students, school staff, and students' parents.

It also extends to School Board members (I've had coworkers or their spouses on the local school board). It's also good for homeschoolers. In general, I use my employer discount when buying Apple gear.

Both my wife and I, for our first Macbook Air laptops in 2015, were going to use our student discounts (we were both college students). Then someone told us why we didn't just go to BestBuy because they were running a special that was even cheaper.

Sure enough, got 2 Macbook Air 13' laptops for $750 each (new). Sure they were base models but we used them until 2018 while we saved up for our MBPs. We didn't use our student discount on those. Didn't even think to... (may be thinking of another company).

Our MBAs were the only time we ever looked into using our student discount. Back then it wanted to verify by school and name, etc... --- if I'm remembering correctly. Huge hassle, so that kinda dissuaded us from doing it again.

Helped that the Best Buy was 15 mins from our house and the Apple Store was 1+ hour.
