I was just thinking about Apple's typical back-to-school promotions like: buy a macbook get an iPod Touch free ($199 value). Could you resist the offer to buy a macbook, at the educational price $899, and get an iPad for $299?

Laptop for the times when you need serious computing power and for extended typing sessions and the iPad to take to class, student union, library, etc. Also, if Apple begins to offer e-textbooks then the iPad will absolutely become the thing nearly every student will want in their hands.

I was a bit underwhelmed when the iPad was announced but the more I think about how I would use it and who else could benefit from a device like this, I am now convinced this will be a HUGE hit.

It does seem the battle lines are drawn.

Those who are most against the iPad and bashing it the hardest also seem to be those most against education, so I suspect you are on to something here.

Make it "Buy a MacBook, get an iPad for free" and every college kid will have one for the apartment. Ask for another $299 and only their parents may invest to have one for themselves. I know a slew of parents that kept the "free" iPod Touch after buying their kid a Mac for school.
